A Revised Scheme for the Reactivity of Iron (oxyhydr)oxide Minerals towards Dissolved Sulfide

چکیده
The reaction between dissolved sulfide and synthetic iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals was studied in artificial seawater and 0.1 M NaCl at pH 7.5 and 25°C. Electron transfer between surface-complexed sulfide and solid phase Fe(III) results in the oxidation of dissolved sulfide to elemental sulfur, and the subsequent dissolution of the surface-reduced Fe. Sulfide oxidation and Fe(II) dissolution kinetics were evaluated for freshly precipitated hydrous ferric oxide (HFO), lepidocrocite, goethite, magnetite, hematite, and Al-substituted lepidocrocite. Reaction kinetics were expressed in terms of an empirical rate equation of the form: A k R i i 0.5 0 t 2S) H ( = = where Ri is the rate of Fe(II) dissolution (RFe) or the rate of sulfide oxidation (RS), ki is the appropriate rate constant (kFe or kS), (H2S)t=0 is the initial dissolved sulfide concentration, and A is the initial mineral surface area. The rate constants derived from the above equation suggest that the reactivity of Fe (oxyhydr)oxide minerals varies over two orders of magnitude, with increasing reactivity in the order, goethite < hematite < magnetite << lepidocrocite ≈ HFO. Competitive adsorption of major seawater solutes has little effect on reaction kinetics for the most reactive minerals, but results in rates which are reduced by 6580% for goethite, magnetite, and hematite. This decrease in reaction rates likely arises from the blocking of surface sites for sulfide complexation by the adsorption of seawater solutes during the later, slower stages of adsorption (possibly attributable to diffusion into micropores or aggregates). The derivation of half lives for the sulfide-promoted reductive dissolution of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides in seawater, suggests that mineral reactivity can broadly be considered in terms of two mineral groups. Minerals with a lower degree of crystal order (hydrous ferric oxides and lepidocrocite) are reactive on a time-scale of minutes to hours. The more ordered minerals (goethite, magnetite, and hematite) are reactive on a time-scale of

Influence of soil minerals on chromium(VI) reduction by sulfide under anoxic conditions
The effects of soil minerals on chromate (CrVIO42-, noted as Cr(VI)) reduction by sulfide were investigated in the pH range of 7.67 to 9.07 under the anoxic condition. The examined minerals included montmorillonite (Swy-2), illite (IMt-2), kaolinite (KGa-2), aluminum oxide (gamma-Al2O3), titanium oxide (TiO2, P-25, primarily anatase), and silica (SiO2). Based on their effects on Cr(VI) reductio...
متن کاملReactivity of Pb(II) at the Mn(III,IV) (oxyhydr)oxide--water interface.
In this study, the reactivity of lead (Pb(II)) on naturally occurring Mn(III,IV) (oxyhydr)oxide minerals was evaluated using kinetic, thermodynamic, and spectroscopic investigations. Aqueous Pb(II) was more strongly adsorbed to birnessite (delta-MnO1.7) than to manganite (gamma-MnOOH) under all experimental conditions. The isoteric heat of Pb adsorption (delta HT) or birnessite was 94 kJ mol-1 ...

متن کاملSynthesis of calcium carbide-derived carbon by mechanochemical reaction of calcium carbide with sulfur, iron sulfide and zinc oxide
In the present work, we report a novel design and preparation for the mechanochemical synthesis of calcium carbide-derived carbon (CaC2-CDC) at ambient temperature. Thermodynamic calculations confirmed the possibility of calcium carbide-derived carbon formation by the reaction of calcium carbide with sulfur, iron sulfide and zinc oxide at ambient temperature. The CDCs were synthesized by the ba...
متن کاملInhibitory effect of dissolved silica on H₂O₂ decomposition by iron(III) and manganese(IV) oxides: implications for H₂O₂-based in situ chemical oxidation.
The decomposition of H(2)O(2) on iron minerals can generate •OH, a strong oxidant that can transform a wide range of contaminants. This reaction is critical to In Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) processes used for soil and groundwater remediation, as well as advanced oxidation processes employed in waste treatment systems. The presence of dissolved silica at concentrations comparable to those en...
