Network Model Selection Using Task-Focused Minimum Description Length

چکیده
Networks are fundamental models for data used in practically every application domain. In most instances, several implicit or explicit choices about the network definition impact the translation of underlying data to a network representation, and the subsequent question(s) about the underlying system being represented. Users of downstream network data may not even be aware of these choices or their impacts. We propose a taskfocused network model selection methodology which addresses several key challenges. Our approach constructs network models from underlying data and uses minimum description length (MDL) criteria for selection. Our methodology measures efficiency, a general and comparable measure of the network’s performance of a local (i.e. node-level) predictive task of interest. Selection on efficiency favors parsimonious (e.g. sparse) models to avoid overfitting and can be applied across arbitrary tasks and representations (including networks and non-network models). We show stability, sensitivity, and significance testing in our

The Effect of Different Task Types on Learning Prepositions in Form–Focused and Meaning–Focused Interaction Enhancement-Based Classes
The current study examines the impact of different task types on learning prepositions in form and meaning- focused interaction enhancement- based classes. The participants were 57 second Year University students enrolled in three intact lab classes at Tabriz Islamic Azad University. The first group was provided with form-focused interaction enhancement, the second with the meaning-focused int...
متن کاملABN: A Fast, Greedy Bayesian Network Classifier
Adaptive Bayes Network (ABN) is a fast algorithm for constructing Bayesian Network classifiers using Minimum Description Length (MDL) and automatic feature selection. ABN does well in domains where Naive Bayes fares poorly, and in other domains is, within statistical bounds, at least as good a classifier.
متن کاملOn Different Model Selection Criteria In A Forward And Backward Regression Hybrid Network
An assessment of the performance hybrid network with different model selection criteria is considered. These criteria are used in an automatic model selection algorithm for constructing a hybrid network of radial and Perceptron hidden units for regression. A forward step builds the full hybrid network; A model selection criterion is used for controlling the network-size and another criterion is...
متن کاملPruning transitions in a hidden Markov model with optimal brain surgeon
This paper concerns about reducing the topology of a hidden Markov model (HMM) for a given task. The purpose is two-fold: (1) to select a good model topology with improved generalization capability; and/or (2) to reduce the model complexity so as to save memory and computation costs. The first goal falls into the active research area of model selection. From the model-theoretic research communi...
متن کاملGraph Model Selection using the Minimum Description Length Principle
In recent years, there has been a proliferation of theoretical graph models, e.g., preferential attachment, motivated by real-world graphs such as the Web or Internet topology. Typically these models are designed to mimic particular properties observed in the graphs, such as power-law degree distribution or the small-world phenomenon. The mainstream approach to comparing models for these graphs...
