Chest X – ray (CXR), posteroanterior view showed a homogeneous rounded opacity in left lower zone, and absolute eosinophil count was 1,200/ μL. Contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) scan of thorax showed a mass – like lesion in left lower lobe with air pockets within the lesion – the ‘air – bubble’ sign (Figure 1). Previous CXR of 6 months back revealed a cystic lesion with air – fluid level within it in the left lower zone, which was capped with a crescent of air – forming ‘double arch’ sign or Cumbo’s sign, another radiological sign which is pathognomonic for ruptured hydatid cyst (Figure 2). Anti – echinococcal IgG antibody was highly positive, i.e., 32.45 U/mL (normal value: < 8 U/mL, ELISA method). Hydat id disease i s caused by a parasite, Echinococcus granulosus. The diagnosis of echinococcosis is generally made on the basis of clinical history and ‘Double – arch’ sign and ‘Air – bubble’ Sign – Two Radiological Signs of Ruptured Hydatid Cyst in Lung

Complicated Hydatid Cyst and “Air Bubble” Sign: A Stepping-Stone to Correct Diagnosis
BACKGROUND Hydatid cyst, or Echinococcosis, is an important helminthic zoonotic disease in humans that commonly affects the liver and lungs. Uncomplicated hydatid cysts, seen as round opaque lesions on chest radiography, are easily diagnosed, whereas complicated cysts (infected and or perforated) may change the radiographic appearance of the hydatid cyst, causing an incorrect diagnosis and dela...

Introduction : The objective of this study was to give a description of the most prominent atypical radiological presentations of lung hydatidosis. Materials and methods: All patients diagnosed with pulmonary hydatidosis by surgical exploration were included in this study. Standard chest roentgenogram and computed tomography CT) were evaluated before surgery for lung cysts or unknown lesions. R...
متن کاملTHE SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF COMPLICATED PULMONARY HYDATID CYSTS
Iran is recognized as an endemic area for lung hydatidosis. Surgical removal of some hydatid cysts may have setious morbid consequences. To determine the characteristics of these special cysts, a retrospective survey was carried out on patients admitted to Modarres Hospital in Tehran between 1989 and 1998. We have found that ruptured, bilateral, lung located, and giant cysts (> ] 0 cm) caus...

Hydatid cyst is a disease caused by a parasitic tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus, and most commonly involves liver and lung. Ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst can present a diagnostic challenge, and radiograph can be inconclusive. Anaphylactic reaction is a rare complication of ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst. A 22-year-old male came to our emergency department in shock with symptoms of shortnes...
متن کاملComputed Tomography (CT) Findings of Pulmonary Hydatid Cysts in Children and the Factors Related to Cyst Rupture
BACKGROUND The lungs are the most common site of hydatid cysts in children. Rupture is the main complication of cysts causing morbidity and mortality. In this study we aimed to comprehensively describe the CT signs for cysts and analyze the relationship of cyst ruptures to the diameter and location of cyst. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 145 cysts from 102 patients, aged 17 years or younger, w...
