چکیده

Spatial disparity between a physical object and its visual presentation is very common in virtual environments. An experiment was conducted to systematically investigate the effects of orientation disparity between haptic and graphic displays of objects on human performance in a virtual environment. It was found that human performance was optimum with no orientation disparity. Orientation disparity had significant effects on the object orientation component, but did not appear to affect the object transportation component of human movements. It appeared that, when the orientation disparity was present, the orientation speed relied more on the haptic display of objects while the orientation accuracy depended more on the graphic display of objects. Implications for human-computer interface design were also discussed.

Identification of Haptic Virtual Objects with Different Degrees of Complexity

Haptics used in natural contexts is much more efficient in identifying real objects than virtual objects via haptic displays. The aim of this study was to get some insight about the effects of object complexity on the identification of virtual objects varying in complexity on the basis of form properties. The virtual objects were synthetic human heads with varying number of face features. Fourt...

Computer Haptics : Rendering Techniques for Force - Feedback in Virtual Environments

Haptic virtual environments (VEs) are computer-generated environments within which human users can touch, feel, and manipulate virtual objects in real time through force or tactile feedback. Integration of force-feedback into VEs with graphical and auditory displays is expected to have many applications in the area of medical training, CAD/CAM, entertainment, graphic arts, and education. The de...

A Haptic Interface for Linked Immersive and Desktop Displays: Maintaining Sufficient Frame Rate for Haptic Rendering

We perceive the real world through many senses. Most Virtual Reality (VR) display systems, however, only present the illusion to our visual and sometimes audio senses. Walk-in display systems, such as a CAVE, allow users to see their own bodies as they interact with virtual objects. Collaborative virtual environments CVE allow many users to share the same virtual experience including the manipu...

Assembling Virtual Fixtures for Guidance in Training Environments

We set up a library of virtual fixtures with both haptic and graphic properties and behaviors. For a given task, Virtual Fixture Assembly Language (VFAL) could be used to construct various virtual fixture series, with graphic and force guidance rules, making the low-level haptic and graphic rendering details transparent to the developers. An experiment evaluated the application of virtual fixtu...
