Background Subtraction from the Dilepton Spectra in Nuclear Collisions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Properties of the background subtraction procedure commonly used for the analysis of dilepton spectra are discussed within a simple model. It is shown that a production asymmetry between positive and negative background muons and a large multiplicity of signal pairs will lead to biased results. Therefore the applicability of this procedure for the analysis of nucleus–nucleus data should be reconsidered. E–mail: [email protected]–frankfurt.de E–mail: [email protected]

Charm Estimate from the Dilepton Spectra in Nuclear Collisions
A validity of a recent estimate of an upper limit of charm production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A·GeV is critically discussed. Within a simple model we study properties of the background subtraction procedure used for an extraction of the charm signal from the analysis of dilepton spectra. We demonstrate that a production asymmetry between positively and negatively charged background m...
متن کاملSeeing phi meson through the dilepton spectra in heavy-ion collisions
Dilepton spectra from the decay of phi mesons produced in heavy-ion collisions at SIS/GSI energies (∼ 2 GeV/nucleon) are studied in the relativistic transport model. We include phi mesons produced from baryon-baryon, pion-baryon, and kaon-antikaon collisions. The cross sections for the first two processes are obtained from an one-boson-exchange model, while that for the last process is taken to...
متن کاملIntermediate mass dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions at SPS energies
Through the analysis of HELIOS-3 data on dilepton spectra, we demonstrate the importance of secondary processes for the dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions in the intermediate mass region. We find that, while the dilepton spectra in proton-induced reactions can be nicely explained by the decay of primary vector mesons, charmed hadrons, and initial Drell-Yan processes, the strong enhance...
متن کاملHow To Find Charm in Nuclear Collisions at RHIC and LHC
Measurements of dilepton production from charm decay and Drell-Yan processes respectively probe the gluon and sea quark distributions in hadronic collisions. In nucleus-nucleus collisions, these hard scattering processes constitute a ‘background’ to thermal contributions from the hot matter produced by the collision. To determine the magnitude and behavior of this background, we calculate the h...
متن کاملov 2 00 6 Dilepton distributions at backward rapidities
The dilepton production at backward rapidities in pAu and pp collisions at RHIC and LHC energies is investigated in the dipole approach. The results are shown through the nuclear modification ratio RpA considering transverse momentum and rapidity spectra. The dilepton modification ratio presents interesting behavior at the backward rapidities when compared with the already known forward ones, s...
