Parity Violation in Neutrino Transport and the Origin of Pulsar Kicks

چکیده
In proto-neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, the neutrino-nucleon scattering/absorption cross sections depend on the direction of neutrino momentum with respect to the magnetic field axis, a manifestation of parity violation in weak interactions. We study the deleptonization and thermal cooling (via neutrino emission) of proto-neutron stars in the presence of such asymmetric neutrino opacities. Significant asymmetry in neutrino emission is obtained due to multiple neutrino-nucleon scatterings. For an ordered magnetic field threading the neutron star interior, the fractional asymmetry in neutrino emission is about 0.006 (B/1014 G), corresponding to a pulsar kick velocity of about 200 (B/1014 G)km s−1 for a total radiated neutrino energy of 3× 1053 erg. Neutrino Transport in Strongly Magnetized Proto-Neutron Stars and the Origin of Pulsar Kicks: I. The Effect of Parity Violation in Weak Interactions
In proto-neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, the neutrino-nucleon scattering/absorption cross sections depend asymmetrically on the direction of neutrino momentum with respect to the magnetic field axis, a manifestation of parity violation in weak interactions. We develop the moment formalism of neutrino transport in the presence of such asymmetric neutrino opacities. For a given neutrin...
متن کاملNeutrino Transport in Strongly Magnetized Proto-Neutron Stars and the Origin of Pulsar Kicks: II. The Effect of Asymmetric Magnetic Field Topology
In proto-neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, the cross section for νe (ν̄e) absorption on neutrons (protons) depends on the local magnetic field strength due to the quantization of energy levels for the e (e+) produced in the final state. If the neutron star possesses an asymmetric magnetic field topology in the sense that the magnitude of magnetic field in the north pole is different fro...
متن کاملPulsar kicks by anisotropic neutrino emission from quark matter in strong magnetic fields
We discuss a pulsar acceleration mechanism based on asymmetric neutrino emission from the direct quark Urca process in the interior of proto neutron stars. The anisotropy is caused by a strong magnetic field which polarises the spin of the electrons opposite to the field direction. Due to parity violation the neutrinos and anti-neutrinos leave the star in one direction accelerating the pulsar. ...
متن کاملEffects of CPT and Lorentz Invariance Violation on Pulsar Kicks
The breakdown of Lorentz’s and CPT invariance, as described by the Extension of the Standard Model, gives rise to a modification of the dispersion relation of particles. Consequences of such a modification are reviewed in the framework of pulsar kicks induced by neutrino oscillations (activesterile conversion). A peculiar feature of the modified energy-momentum relations is the occurrence of te...
متن کاملPhysics of Neutron Star Kicks
It is no longer necessary to “sell” the idea of pulsar kicks, the notion that neutron stars receive a large velocity (a few hundred to a thousand km s) at birth. However, the origin of the kicks remains mysterious. We review the physics of different kick mechanisms, including hydrodynamically driven, neutrino and magnetically driven kicks.
