چکیده

This paper presents a new method to ignite pure thermite powder by low-power microwaves ( 100 W). In this method, the microwave energy is supplied locally to the powder. It creates a confined hotspot, and initiates a self-propagating combustion in the entire powder volume. The coupled thermal–electromagnetic interaction evolved within the powder prior to its ignition is simulated theoretically, taking into account the powder’s temperature-dependent parameters. The simulation results show a thermalrunaway instability and localized heating within a confined hotspot, induced mostly by the microwave’s electric-field component. The experimental setup employs accordingly an open-end applicator implemented by a miniature solid-state microwave-drill device inserted into the thermite powder as a local igniter. The experimental results show ignition within 3 s at 2.1-GHz, 100-W microwave injection, in agreement with the theoretical model. The dependence of the minimal microwave power on the exposure time required to reach combustion is identified. Practical aspects and potential applications of this mechanism, such as rust conversion, energy production, and propulsion are indicated. 2012 The Combustion Institute. Published by Elsevier Inc. Underwater Microwave Ignition of Hydrophobic Thermite Powder Enabled by Magnetic Encapsulation

Highly energetic thermite compounds have potential applications in combustion synthesis of various materials and processes, but they are hard to ignite by conventional means. A new technique for ignition of pure thermite powder in air atmosphere, using localized microwaves, was demonstrated recently. This exothermic zero-oxygen-balanced reaction may occur underwater, but due to the hydrophobic ...

Observations of Ball-Lightning-Like Plasmoids Ejected from Silicon by Localized Microwaves

This paper presents experimental characterization of plasmoids (fireballs) obtained by directing localized microwave power (<1 kW at 2.45 GHz) onto a silicon-based substrate in a microwave cavity. The plasmoid emerges up from the hotspot created in the solid substrate into the air within the microwave cavity. The experimental diagnostics employed for the fireball characterization in this study ...

Computational Modeling of Combustion Wave in Nanoscale Thermite Reaction

Nanoscale thermites such as the composite mixture of nano-sized aluminum and molybdenum trioxide powders possess several technical advantages such as much higher reaction rate and shorter ignition delay, when compared to the conventional energetic formulations made of micron-sized metal and oxidizer particles. In this study, the self-propagation of combustion wave in compacted pellets of nanosc...

Insertion and confinement of hydrophobic metallic powder in water: the bubble-marble effect.

Metallic powders such as thermite are known as efficient fuels also applicable in oxygen-free environments. However, due to their hydrophobicity, they hardly penetrate into water. This paper presents an effect that enables the insertion and confinement of hydrophobic metallic powders in water, based on encapsulating an air bubble surrounded by a hydrophobic metallic shell. This effect, regarded...
