چکیده
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare the morphologic changes of the upper airway space in Class III patients who underwent mandibular setback or bimaxillary surgery (maxillary advancement and mandibular setback) by computed tomography at 2 levels: soft palate and base of tongue. METHODS The sample consisted of 47 subjects in 2 groups who had been diagnosed as having Class III skeletal deformities and had been treated by mandibular setback or bimaxillary surgery (maxillary advancement and mandibular setback). Anteroposterior, lateral, and cross-sectional area dimensions of the airway at the level of soft palate and base of tongue were measured pre- and postoperatively on computed tomography images. RESULTS Anteroposterior dimensions of the airway decreased in both groups (P < .0001); however, the reduction was significantly less in cases treated with bimaxillary surgery (P < .05). In the mandibular setback surgery group, the cross-sectional area of the airway decreased significantly (P < .001). Although the cross-sectional area of the airway decreased in the bimaxillary surgery group, the reduction was not statistically significant (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that bimaxillary surgery can prevent narrowing of the upper airway in the correction of Class III deformities in comparison with mandibular setback surgery used as the sole treatment. Computed tomography was valuable in determining the effects of surgical treatment on pharyngeal airway dimensions.

Changes of the Posterior Airway Space Following Orthognathic Surgery in Class III
Objective: Adaptation of the pharyngeal airway space does occur after different surgical strategies of class III patients including mandibular setback, maxillary advancement and bimaxillary surgery. The aim of this study is to conduct a detailed cephalometric evaluation of the alterations taking place in the morphology of the pharyngeal airway space after treatment of class III skeletal deformi...

Cephalometric studies show significant gender differences in the size of the pharyngeal airway space. This study aimed to investigate and compare morphologic changes after mandibular setback or two-jaws surgery on the pharyngeal airway in men and women using computed tomography (CT). The sample included 34 women and 13 men diagnosed with Class III skeletal deformities, who had been treated by m...
متن کاملEvaluation of upper airways after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery in patients with skeletal Class III pattern using cone-beam computed tomography
INTRODUCTION It has been suggested that mandibular setback surgery, combined or not with maxillary advancement as a treatment alternative for patients with mandibular prognathism, can induce changes in upper airway space (UAS). Therefore, this study aimed to assess the response of the upper airway in the oropharynx region of patients with Class III skeletal pattern that underwent bimaxillary or...
متن کاملThe structural changes of pharyngeal airway contributing to snoring after orthognathic surgery in skeletal class III patients
BACKGROUND Two-jaw surgery including mandibular and maxillary backward movement procedures are commonly performed to correct class III malocclusion. Bimaxillary surgery can reposition the maxillofacial bone together with soft tissue, such as the soft palate and the tongue base. We analyzed changes of pharyngeal airway narrowing to ascertain clinical correlations with the prevalence of snoring a...

Bimaxillary surgery is the traditional treatment of choice for correcting class III malocclusion which is reported to cause an alteration of oropharyngeal structures and upper airway narrowing that might be a predisposing factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This study aimed to analyze sleep parameters in class III malocclusion subjects and ascertain the prevalence of snoring or OSA follow...
