Se p 20 03 Helium - rich EHB Stars in Globular Clusters ∗

چکیده

Recent UV observations of the most massive Galactic globular clusters show a significant population of hot stars below the zero-age HB (“blue hook” stars), which cannot be explained by canonical stellar evolution. Stars which suffer unusually large mass loss on the red giant branch and thus experience the heliumcore flash while descending the white dwarf cooling curve could populate this region. They should show higher temperatures than the hottest canonical HB stars and their atmospheres should be helium-rich and probably C/N-rich. We have obtained spectra of blue hook stars in ω Cen and NGC 2808 to test this possibility. Our analysis shows that the blue hook stars in these clusters reach effective temperatures well beyond the hot end of the canonical EHB and have higher helium abundances than canonical EHB stars. These results support the hypothesis that the blue hook stars arise from stars which ignite helium on the white dwarf cooling curve.

Hot HB stars in globular clusters - physical parameters and consequences for theory IV . sdB candidates in M 15

Quantitative spectroscopic analyses of two faint blue stars (V=19 m. 5 – 20 m. 0) in the globular cluster M 15 are presented. Their derived T eff , gravities and absolute magnitudes (T eff =24000K, log g=5.2, M V =4 m. 3; T eff =36000K, log g=5.9, M V =4 m. 7, respectively) are matched very well by models for the extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB). Both stars are bona-fide subdwarf B stars making ...

Hot UV bright stars in globular clusters

We have obtained medium-resolution spectra of seven UV-bright stars discovered on images of four southern globular clusters obtained with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT). Effective temperatures, surface gravities and helium abundances are derived from LTE and non-LTE model atmosphere fits. Three of the stars have sdO spectra, including M4Y453 (Teff = 58800 K, log g = 5.15), NGC 6723-III...

A possible solution for the lack of EHB binaries in globular clusters

Context. The binary fraction among extreme horizontal branch (EHB) stars in Galactic globular clusters (GCs) is much lower than that among their counterparts, field hot subdwarfs, by an order of magnitude. This casts serious doubt on their formation channels. Aims. In the Letter, I explain the difference between the field and the cluster EHB stars with the binary model of Han et al. (2002, 2003...

Formation of the Galactic globular clusters with He-rich stars in low-mass halos virialized at high redshift

Recent observations have reported that the Galactic globular clusters (GCs) with unusually extended horizontal-branch (EHB) morphologies show a significantly lower velocity dispersion compared with that of the entire Galactic GC system. We consider that the observed distinctive kinematics of GCs with EHB has valuable information on the formation epochs of GCs and accordingly discuss this observ...

High-resolution optical spectra of thirteen blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars in the globular cluster M13 show enormous deviations in element abundances from the expected cluster metallicity. In the hotter stars (Teff > 12000K), helium is depleted by factors of 10 to 100 below solar, while iron is enhanced to three times the solar abundance, two orders of magnitude above the canonical metallic...
