Lexicalization of Context (hpsg-97 Draft)
نویسنده
چکیده
We propose lexical rather than phrasal amalgamation of contextual features. On a theoretical level, the lexicalization of context naturally follows other recent revisions concerned with lexicalization of set-valued features (nonlocal features, quantiier storage). On a computational level, it ooers advantages in using HPSG with head-driven generation algorithms. On a linguistic level, we sketch a lexical context approach to register variation in English relative clauses.

1Lexicalization of Context
1.1 Introduction This paper proposes the lexicalization of context in HPSG. Instead of phrasal amalgamation of contextual information from a phrase's daughters , which is speciied by the Principle of Contextual Consistency of Pollard and Sag 1994, we propose lexical amalgamation of context from a word's arguments by means of lexical constraints. The Principle of Contextual Consistency is replac...
متن کاملA Logic-Based Implementation of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar
Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), a unification-based formal language for describing linguistic phenomena, has a declarative semantics which makes it amenable to specification as a logic program. The HPSG formalism has undergone significant modification, becoming more declarative and incorporating greater lexicalization, since Proudian and Pollard first introduced a LISP-based HPSG c...
متن کاملFirst Language Activation during Second Language Lexical Processing in a Sentential Context
Lexicalization-patterns, the way words are mapped onto concepts, differ from one language to another. This study investigated the influence of first language (L1) lexicalization patterns on the processing of second language (L2) words in sentential contexts by both less proficient and more proficient Persian learners of English. The focus was on cases where two different senses of a polys...
متن کاملAn Alternate View on Strong Lexicalization in TAG
TAGs were recently shown not to be closed under strong lexicalization but to be strongly lexicalizable by context-free tree grammars of rank 2. This paper presents an alternative lexicalization procedure that builds on an earlier generalization of TAGs to multi-dimensional trees. A previous theorem that every Tree Substitution grammar is strongly lexicalized by a corresponding TAG is lifted to ...
متن کاملMultiple Context-Free Tree Grammars and Multi-component Tree Adjoining Grammars
Strong lexicalization is the process of turning a grammar generating trees into an equivalent one, in which all rules contain a terminal leaf. It is known that tree adjoining grammars cannot be strongly lexicalized, whereas the more powerful simple context-free tree grammars can. It is demonstrated that multiple simple context-free tree grammars are as expressive as multi-component tree adjoini...
