A model of the bifurcated current sheet

چکیده
[1] Recent Geotail and Cluster observations revealed that thin current sheets in the near-Earth tail may have a bifurcated structure. In some cases the electrons are found to dominate the current. We present a generalization of the Harris current sheet equilibrium, which reproduces these features. The model ion distribution contains an additional element, viz. the quasi-adiabatic invariant of the ion motion across the sheet, and assumes ion temperature anisotropy outside the sheet. Bifurcated current sheets appear in the case of small ion anisotropy with T? i > Tki (pancake distributions). In the opposite case (cigar distributions) the model describes a single-peaked ion-dominated current sheet embedded in a thicker Harris sheet, which is more relevant to the outflow region of the collisionless reconnection pattern in the deHoffman-Teller frame.

A model of the bifurcated current sheet: 2. Flapping motions
[1] A generalization of the Harris [1962] model has recently been proposed to explain the multi-spacecraft Cluster observations of thin bifurcated current sheets. It utilizes features of the ion motion in thin sheets and assumes anisotropy of the ion species. We report the results of 2D PIC simulations based on this model. Simulations confirm its self-consistency. They also reveal the lower-hyb...
متن کاملTHEMIS two‐point measurements of the cross‐tail current density: A thick bifurcated current sheet in the near‐Earth plasma sheet
The basic properties of the near-Earth current sheet from 8 RE to 12 RE were determined based on Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) observations from 2007 to 2013. Ampere's law was used to estimate the current density when the locations of two spacecraft were suitable for the calculation. A total of 3838 current density observations were obtained to stu...
متن کاملKinetic theory and simulation of collisionless tearing in bifurcated current sheets
Observations from the Earth’s geomagnetic tail have established that the current sheet is often bifurcated with two peaks in the current density. These so-called bifurcated current sheets have also been reported in a variety of simulations and often occur in conjunction with significant temperature anisotropy. In this work, a new self-consistent Vlasov equilibrium is developed that permits both...
متن کاملOn the formation of a plasma bubble
[1] A simple self-consistent model is proposed, which describes properties of the tail current sheet after the formation of a small plasmoid on the closed field lines in the magnetotail and its quick tailward retreat. Using a theory of forced magnetic reconnection, it is shown that the flux tube that contained a plasmoid becomes a plasma bubble, with the plasmoid being replaced by a thin curren...

Magnetospheric dynamics is a complex multiscale process whose statistical features can be successfully reproduced using high-dimensional numerical transport models exhibiting the phenomenon of self-organized criticality (SOC). Along this line of research, a 2-dimensional driven current sheet (DCS) model has recently been developed that incorporates an idealized current-driven instability with a...
