N 3 : A Native NBMA Networking stack

چکیده
This paper presents the work done by the group of authors in the framework of the N 3 project, sponsored by Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies, since April, 1997. N 3 is a protocol stack for the provision of native services over networks that belong to the NBMA (Non Broadcasting Medium Access) family, like ATM, ISDN, etc. N 3 resembles an alternative way to networking, rather than traditional MAC/IP/LAN Emulation/MPOA stacks. With this approach, N 3 focuses on simplicity regarding a) minimal protocol translation, b) transparent and scalable node addressing, c) extended transport capabilities, d) QoS monitoring and guarantees, e) user friendly naming, f) support for modern applications' requirements g) unrestricted scalability and transparent inter-domain coverage. The initial design and implementation of N 3 is based on ATM and the described efforts have taken place on FORE Systems ATM switches and terminal adapters, as well as SUN Solaris platforms. The full paper describes in detail the components of the N 3 stack, the architectural difficulties and decisions, the operation of legacy and native services of N 3 , as well as a complete set of measurements of the performance, from the point of view of both call-setup procedures and end-to-end throughput, with respect to the various supported classes of service.

Inhibitory effects of phenethyl isothiocyanate on N-nitrosobenzylmethylamine carcinogenesis in the rat esophagus.
F-344 rats fed diets containing phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC; 3 and 6 mumol/g diet), a naturally occurring constituent of cruciferous vegetables, before and during treatment with the carcinogen N-nitrosobenzylmethylamine (NBMA), developed 99-100% fewer esophageal tumors than NBMA-treated control rats. PEITC exhibited inhibitory effects against both preneoplastic lesions (acanthosis and hyper...

Metabolic activation may be a key step in determining the tissue specificity of carcinogenic nitrosamines. In previous work, we characterized P450IIE1 (an acetone/ethanol-inducible form of cytochrome P-450) as the major enzyme for the metabolic activation of N-nitrosodimethylamine. In this work, we investigated the metabolism of other N-nitrosodialkylamines in rat liver microsomes and in recons...

Recently, the non-destructive methods have become of interest to the scientists in various fields. One of these method is Ground Penetration Radar (GPR), which can provide a valuable information from underground structures in a friendly environment and cost-effective way. To increase the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the GPR data, multi-fold acquisition is performed, and the Common-Mid-Points ...

Residential broadband digital subscriber loop (DSL) networks are used fo r many applications, such as surfing the Web, ICQ and e -mail. One of the more performance intensive applications is distributed gaming. Participants in an online game may subscribe to multiple ISP’s, or they may share the same ISP. In the case where severa l gamers share the same ISP, they will likely all reside in the sa...
