چکیده

The finite difference discretization of the Poisson equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions leads to a large, sparse system of linear equations for the solution values at the interior mesh points. This problem is a popular and useful model problem for performance comparisons of iterative methods for the solution of linear systems. To use the successive overrelaxation (SOR) method in these comparisons, a formula for the optimal value of its relaxation parameter is needed. In standard texts, this value is only available for the case of two space dimensions, even though the model problem is also instructive in higher dimensions. This note extends the derivation of the optimal relaxation parameter to any space dimension and confirms its validity by test calculations in three dimensions. Key words—SOR method, Optimal relaxation parameter, Sparse linear systems, Poisson equation, Finite difference method.

The Optimal Relaxation Parameter for the SOR Method Applied to a Classical Model Problem

The successive overrelaxation (SOR) method is an example of a classical iterative method for the approximate solution of a system of linear equations. Its iteration matrix depends on a relaxation parameter. There is no explicit formula for the optimal relaxation parameter in terms of properties of the system matrix of a general system matrix. However, for the classical model problem of a finite...

On the Successive Overrelaxation Method

Problem statement: A new variant of the Successive Overrelaxation (SOR) method for solving linear algebraic systems, the KSOR method was introduced. The treatment depends on the assumption that the current component can be used simultaneously in the evaluation in addition to the use the most recent calculated components as in the SOR method. Approach: Using the hidden explicit characterization ...

Multigrid solution of the Poisson - Boltzmann equation

A multigrid method is presented for the numerical solution of the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation arising in molecular biophysics. The equation is discretized with the finite volume method, and the numerical solution of the discrete equations is accomplished with multiple grid techniques originally developed for two-dimensional interface problems occurring in reactor physics. A detailed a...

Convergence of SOR in MoM Analysis of Array Antenna

Convergence of the iterative method based on the successive overrelaxation (SOR) method is investigated to solve the matrix equation in the moment analysis of array antennas. It is found this method can be applied to the sub domain method of moments with fast convergence if the grouping technique is applied and the over-relaxation parameter is properly selected, and the computation time for sol...

Convergence of a semi-analytical method on the fuzzy linear systems

In this paper, we apply the  homotopy analysis method (HAM) for solving fuzzy  linear systems and present  the necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of series solution obtained via the HAM. Also, we present a new criterion for choosing a proper value of convergence-control parameter $hbar$ when the HAM is applied to linear system of equations. Comparisons are made between the ...
