Absorptive capacity, technological opportunity, knowledge spillovers, and innovative effort

چکیده
This paper analyses the influence of two variables related with industrial structure (technological opportunity and knowledge spillovers) and one management variable (absorptive capacity) on the innovative efforts developed by firms. These relationships are investigated in a total of 406 Spanish manufacturing companies with an established degree of innovative activity. In addition the nature of the variable ‘absorptive capacity’ is considered and an index is suggested that would render this concept operational through analysis of the factors defining it and by which the process of building it up is influenced. As a result of this study it is demonstrated that the absorptive capacity variable determines innovative effort to a greater extent than the two structural variables. It is also shown that absorptive capacity has a moderating effect on the relationship between technological opportunity and innovative effort being this one of the most remarkable results obtained from the work. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Foreign direct investment and SME growth: Highlighting the need for absorptive capacity to support linkages between transnational corporations and SMEs in developing countries
FDI has always been thought to affect the growth of local firms through technological spillovers and as such many developing countries have invested a lot to attract FDI. These spillovers can happen through FDI having backward, forward and horizontal linkages with local firms. Though in many countries FDI has contributed to the development of local firms, there is evidence to suggest that this ...

We analyse the impact of ICT spillovers on productivity using company data for the U.S. We account for interand intra-industry spillovers and assess the role played by firm’s absorptive capacity. Our results show that intra-industry ICT spillovers have a contemporaneous negative effect that turns positive 5 years after the initial investment. For inter-industry spillovers both contemporaneous a...

In knowledge-based economy, knowledge has a public good and non-rivalry nature. Firms build their own knowledge stock not only by means of internal R&D and collaboration with partners, but also by means of previously spilled over knowledge of other firms and public research laboratories (such as universities). Firms based on their absorptive capacity, and level of intra-industry and extra-indus...

This paper argues that actual technological spillovers are not substantial in developing countries because of the absence of an absorptive capacity. We carry out a panel data analysis in an attempt to gain insight into the specific aspects that enable economies to benefit from the backlog of existing knowledge. Our findings indicate that low productivity effects of human capital coupled with we...
