چکیده

Acetobacter suboxydans has a powerful system for the oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid, as might be expected from the fact that the acetic acid bacteria have long been used for the commercial production of vinegar. Alcohol dehydrogenase in soluble extracts has been found to be DPlSspecific1 (1). It has now been observed that either TPN or DPN can be used as coenzyme for the oxidation of acetaldehyde. The concentration of DPN needed for optimal activity is, however, much higher than that of TPN. In this paper, the oxidative behavior, purification, and properties of the enzymes are presented.

OXIDATIONS BY ACETOBACTER SUBOXYDANS Sirs: Acetobacter suboxydans is known to bring about oxidation of polyhydroxy

Acetobacter suboxydans is known to bring about oxidation of polyhydroxy compounds. The action of the bacterial enzyme is limited, however, to substances with specific configurations. According to the generalization of Bertrand,’ only those hydroxyl groups are oxidized which are situated between a primary hydroxyl group and a secondary one in a cis position. Hann, Tilden, and Hudson,2 in a compa...

Preparation and Activity of Immobilized Acetobacter suboxydans Cells.

The possibility of immobilization of Acetobacter suboxydans cells by entrapment within polyacrylamide gels or by intercellular cross-linking with glutaral-dehyde was investigated. The oxidation of unsubstituted alditols and aldose diethyl dithioacetals by the resultant modified cells has been achieved.

Sources of energy and the dinitrophenol effect in the growth of Acetobacter suboxydans.

In resting Acetobacter suboxydans cells, glycerol can be oxidized beyond the dihydroxyacetone stage, and sorbitol, beyond the sorbose stage (King and Cheldelin, 1952a). 2 ,4-Dinitrophenol inhibits the further oxidation of dihydroxyacetone or sorbose but has no effect upon the first step oxidations (King and Cheldelin, 1952b). Since these keto derivatives can be metabolized further by resting ce...

Tricarboxylic acid cycle activity in Acetobacter pasteurianum.

Previous papers from this laboratory (King and Cheldelin, 1952, 1952a, 1954; Hauge et al., 1955, 1955a) have reported on the oxidation of carbohydrates in Acetobacter suboxydans. Neither resting nor disintegrated cells can oxidize acetate or other intermediates of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. These findings have recently been confirmed in another laboratory (Rao and Gunsalus, 1955). From the c...
