Violent Relaxation of Indistinguishable Objects and Neutrino Hot Dark Matter in Clusters of Galaxies

چکیده

The statistical mechanical investigation of violent relaxation (LyndenBell 1967) is extended to indistinguishable objects. It is found that, coincidentally, the equilibrium distribution is the same as that obtained for classical objects. For massive neutrinos, the Tremaine & Gunn (1979) phase space bound is revisited and reinterpretated as the limit indicating the onset of degeneracy related to the coarse-grained phase space distribution. In the context of one of the currently most popular cosmological models, the Cold and Hot Dark Matter (CHDM) model (Primack et al. 1995), the onset of degeneracy may be of importance in the core region of clusters of galaxies. Degeneracy allows the neutrino HDM density to exceed the limit imposed by the Tremaine & Gunn (1979) bound while accounting for the phase space bound. Hot Dark Matter in Cosmology

1 Historical Summary Cosmological dark matter in the form of neutrinos with masses of up to a few electron volts is known as hot dark matter. In 1979-83, this appeared to be perhaps the most plausible dark matter candidate. Such HDM models of cosmological structure formation led to a top-down formation scenario, in which superclusters of galaxies are the first objects to form, with galaxies and...

Cold + Hot Dark Matter after Super-kamiokande

The recent atmospheric neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande provide strong evidence of neutrino oscillations and therefore of non-zero neutrino mass. These data imply a lower limit on the hot dark matter (i.e., light neutrino) contribution to the cosmological density Ων > ∼ 0.001 — almost as much as that of all the stars in the universe — and permit higher Ων . The “standard” COBE-normalized cri...

The Formation of the First Globular Clusters in Dwarf Galaxies before the Epoch of Reionization

We explore a mechanism for the formation of the first globular clusters, operating during the assembly of dwarf galaxies at high redshifts, z ∼> 10. The substructure in the dark matter and the corresponding potential wells are responsible for setting the cluster scale of ∼ 10M . The second mass scale in the formation problem, the stellar scale of ∼ 1M , is determined in turn by the processes th...

The quest for dark matter with neutrino telescopes∗

There should be not doubt by now that neutrino telescopes are competitive instruments when it comes to searches for dark matter. Their large detector volumes collect hundreds of neutrinos per day. They scrutinize the whole sky continuously, being sensitive to neutrino signals of all flavours from dark matter annihilations in nearby objects (Sun, Earth, Milky Way Center and Halo) as well as from...

Whatever Happened to Hot Dark Matter? *

The lightest of the fundamental matter particles, neutrinos may play important roles in determining the structure of the universe. Neutrinos helped to control the expansion rate of the universe during the first few minutes, when the deuterium and most of the helium in the universe were formed, and neutrinos and photons each accounted for nearly half of the entire energy density of the universe ...
