چکیده

It is well known that the mass function for halos in CDM cosmology is a relatively steep power law (n(M) ∝ M) for low masses, possibly too steep to be consistent with observations. But how steep is the galaxy mass function? We have analyzed the stellar and gas mass functions of the first massive luminous objects formed in a ΛCDM universe, as calculated in the numerical simulation described in Gnedin (2000ab). Our analysis indicates that, as suspected, the relationship between luminous or gaseous matter and total (primarily dark matter) mass is present address: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Mail Code 6608J, 1200 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20460

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

The Central Mass and Phase-Space Densities of Dark Matter Halos: Cosmological Implications

Current data suggest that the central mass densities ρ0 and phase-space densities Q ≡ ρ0/σ 3 V of cosmological halos in the present universe are correlated with their velocity dispersions σV over a very wide range of σV from less than 10 to more than 1000 km s. Such correlations are an expected consequence of the statistical correlation of the formation epochs of virialized objects in the CDM m...

Cold Dark Matter and Strong Gravitational Lensing: Concord or Conflict?

Using the number and sizes of observed gravitational lenses, I derive upper limits on the dark matter content of elliptical galaxies. On average, dark matter can account for no more than 33% of the total mass within one effective radius (Re) of elliptical galaxies, or 40% of the mass within 2Re (95% confidence upper limits). I show that galaxies built from Cold Dark Matter (CDM) mass distributi...

The same with less: the cosmic web of warm versus cold dark matter dwarf galaxies

We explore fundamental properties of the distribution of low-mass dark matter haloes within the cosmic web using warm dark matter (WDM) and cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological simulations. Using self-abundance-matched mock galaxy catalogues, we show that the distribution of dwarf galaxies in a WDM universe, wherein low-mass halo formation is heavily suppressed, is nearly indistinguishable to th...

Cold Dark Matter Ii: Spatial and Velocity Statistics

We examine high-resolution gravitational N-body simulations of the Ω = 1 cold dark matter (CDM) model in order to determine whether there is any normalization of the initial density fluctuation spectrum that yields acceptable results for galaxy clustering and velocities. Dense dark matter halos in the evolved mass distribution are identified with luminous galaxies; the most massive halos are al...
