چکیده

We have developed a speech synthesis system based on the speech production process. In the system, control parameters for the vocal tract shape and vocal cords are interactively set in order to produce speech output. Such an intuitive system is useful not only for speech research but also for teaching materials in speech science. In this paper, a network-based articulatory speech synthesis system has been developed for distance education. In order to develop a Web-based articulatory speech synthesis system, a standalone type system previously developed was modified by using the program language, Java. Preliminary experiments showed the effectiveness of the system as a teaching material.

Transitional Speech Units and Their Representation by Regressive Markov States: Applications to Spee - Speech and Audio Processing, IEEE Transactions on

Transitional speech units for American English are proposed and constructed via assimilation of active articulatory features. The effectiveness of a feature-based system exploiting the transitional speech units is demonstrated in evaluation experiments, where the new system with use of quadratic regressive states is shown to achieve error rate reduction of 21% compared with the system using onl...

Usability Aspects of the Inside-in Approach for Ancillary Search Tasks on the Web

Given the huge amount of data available over the Web nowadays, search engines become essential tools helping users to find the information they are looking for. Nonetheless, search engines often return large sets of results which must be filtered by the users to find the suitable information items. However, in many cases, filtering is not enough, as the results returned by the engine require us...

Pedagogical Principles of the Theories of Interaction in Distance Learning: The Study of Interaction Anderson Model in Web-based Environments

Background: Interaction is considered a necessary, and integral part in all forms of distance learning and web -based learning environments. That how much technologies can support and help interactions is one of the most important issues that should be considered in the web-based environment. These interactions seek to engage students with other students, teachers and also non-human contex...

Determination of articulatory positions from speech acoustics by applying dynamic articulatory constraints

A method for determining articulatory parameters from speech acoustics is presented. The method is based on a search of an articulatory-acoustic codebook which is designed from simultaneous observation data of articulatory motions and speech acoustics. The codebook search employs dynamic constraints on acoustic behavior as well as articulatory behavior. There are two constrains. One of the cons...

Hearing by Eyes Thanks to the “labiophone”: Exchanging Speech Movements

We present here the “labiophone”, a virtual system for audio-visual speech communication. A clone of the speaker is animated at distance by articulatory movements extracted from the speaker’s image and captured thanks to a video-camera centered on the speaker’s face. The clone consists of a mesh driven by a few articulatory parameters and clothed by blended textures. The characteristics of the ...
