Cineangiographic studies in patients with Starr-Edwards aortic valves.

چکیده
RECENT REPORTS of postoperative clinical and cardiac catheterization studies in patients after replacement of their aortic valves with a ball-valve prosthesis have included adequate clinical and hemodynamic measurements both at rest and during exercise.'-6 There is, however, little information regarding the competency of these valves as determined angiographically, since aortic root cineangiography was not carried out routinely. In this study, aortic root cineangiography was performed in 21 consecutive survivors of replacement of the aortic valve with a Starr-Edwards ball-valve prosthesis. Evaluation of the films has permitted certain conclusions, pertaining to the competency of ballvalve function in a consecutive series of patients and to the necessity of angiographic studies for complete postoperative evaluation.

Chronic hemolysis following fascia lata and Starr-Edwards aortic valve replacement.
Sixty-two patients were investigated for chronic intravascular hemolysis from 3 months to 6iS years following aortic valve replacement; 27 patients had Starr-Edwards prostheses and 35 fascia lata grafts. The findings are suggestive of a significantly higher incidence and degree of hemolysis in patients with Starr-Edwards prostheses compared to those with fascia lata grafts. In both groups regur...

Seventy-four patients with single prosthetic valves (Björk-Shiley or Starr-Edwards) in the mitral or aortic position and 18 controls with rheumatic valvar heart disease were investigated for evidence of intravascular haemolysis. Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was used as the most sensitive indicator of haemolysis. Raised concentrations were found in a third of 39 patients with Björk-Shiley p...

Haemolysis with Bjork-Shiley and Starr-Edwards prosthetic heart valves: a comparative study. A comparison was made of the haemolytic complications in 85 patients with two different types of Starr-Edwards cloth-covered ball and cage prosthesis with those in 44 patients with the Bjork-Shile...
متن کاملExcellent durability of Starr-Edwards ball valves implanted in the aortic and mitral positions for 27 years: report of a rare surgical case.
A 59-year-old male who had undergone aortic and mitral valve replacement with Starr-Edwards ball valves 27 years ago was admitted to our hospital for hemolytic anemia and heart failure. Echocardiography revealed prosthetic valve failure with a high-pressure gradient and small effective orifice area. The Starr-Edwards ball valves were successfully replaced with bileaflet mechanical valves. The e...
متن کاملErythrocyte Destruction in Different Types of Starr-Edwards Aortic Ball Valves
Increased destruction of red blood cells follows the insertion of ball valves into the heart in most cases. Usually, hemolysis is slight, but in some patients uncompensated hemolytic anemia develops. To study the influence on hemolysis of the mechanical properties of the prostheses, the degree of erythrocyte destruction was evaluated in patients with Starr-Edwards aortic prostheses of different...
