A Usage-Based Approach to Recursion in Sentence Processing
نویسندگان
چکیده
Most current approaches to linguistic structure suggest that language is recursive, that recursion is a fundamental property of grammar, and that independent performance constraints limit recursive abilities that would otherwise be infinite. This article presents a usage-based perspective on recursive sentence processing, in which recursion is construed as an acquired skill and in which limitations on the processing of recursive constructions stem from interactions between linguistic experience and intrinsic constraints on learning and processing. A connectionist model embodying this alternative theory is outlined, along with simulation results showing that the model is capable of constituent-like generalizations and that it can fit human data regarding the differential processing difficulty associated with center-embeddings in German and crossdependencies in Dutch. Novel predictions are furthermore derived from the model and corroborated by the results of four behavioral experiments, suggesting that acquired recursive abilities are intrinsically bounded not only when processing complex recursive constructions, such as center-embedding and cross-dependency, but also during processing of the simpler, rightand left-recursive structures.

Sentence Processing Among Native vs. Nonnative Speakers: Implications for Critical Period Hypothesis
The present study intended to investigate the processing behavior of 2 groups of L2 learners of English (high and mid in proficiency) and a group of English native speakers on English active and passive reduced relative clauses. Three sets of tasks, an offline task, and 2 online tasks were conducted. Results revealed that the high-proficiency group’s performance was the same as that of the nati...
متن کاملQuestion Generation with Minimal Recursion Semantics
Question Generation (QG) is the task of generating reasonable questions from a text. It is a relatively new research topic and has its potential usage in intelligent tutoring systems and closed-domain question answering systems. Current approaches include template or syntax based methods. This thesis proposes a novel approach based entirely on semantics. Minimal Recursion Semantics (MRS) is a m...
متن کاملDo Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?
Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...
متن کاملImprovement of Chemical Named Entity Recognition through Sentence-based Random Under-sampling and Classifier Combination
Chemical Named Entity Recognition (NER) is the basic step for consequent information extraction tasks such as named entity resolution, drug-drug interaction discovery, extraction of the names of the molecules and their properties. Improvement in the performance of such systems may affects the quality of the subsequent tasks. Chemical text from which data for named entity recognition is extracte...
متن کاملGraph- and surface-level sentence chunking
The computing cost of many NLP tasks increases faster than linearly with the length of the representation of a sentence. For parsing the representation is tokens, while for operations on syntax and semantics it will be more complex. In this paper we propose a new task of sentence chunking: splitting sentence representations into coherent substructures. Its aim is to make further processing of l...
