Soil Fertility of Decomposed Granite Cut Slopes and Adjacent Vegetated Soils

چکیده
In Thoreau's time, people were already planting trees to restore landscapes. Throughout this century, public and private organizations as well as countless landowners have worked to restore plant communities to sites that have been disturbed by natural disasters, and by human activities such as mining, road construction, clear cutting, and agriculture. Over the last 20 years, restoration ecology—a field that draws its expertise from both ecology and horticulture— has experienced exponential growth. The growth of this field, driven by a rising environmental awareness that is often supported by legislation, has resulted in increased cooperation between these groups. While ecologists have become interested in restoring the structure, function, and biota of natural ecosystems, horticultural scientists have begun using their skills with plant materials in settings outside of traditional commercial and residential settings. The Stress-Strain-Strength Behaviour of a Completely Decomposed Granite Soil Using a New Advanced True Triaxial Testing System
Completely decomposed granite (CDG) soil is the most common type of soils found in more than 90% of the land area in Hong Kong. The measurement of the stress-strain-strength behaviour of the CDG soil is very important for deformation and stability analysis of slopes, retaining walls, excavations, deep and shallow foundations related to the CDG soil ground. As most of these geotechnical structur...
متن کاملTemporal Variation of Interrill Erosion Affected by Slope Gradient in Soils with Different Texture
The process of splash of soil particles by raindrops and their transport by splash or surface shallow flow is considered as interrill erosion, which can reduce soil fertility and cause pollution of surface water. This research was carried out to investigate the temporal variation of interrill erosion in different soils affected by surface slope. For this purpose, laboratory experiments were car...
متن کاملFactors affecting the nutrient status of forest sites in a mountain watershed in Nepal
Soil and foliage samples were collected from 136 sample sites in forested areas of the Dhulikhel Watershed, Nepal. Analyses showed that the soils have small values for pH, base saturation, total nitrogen, carbon and available phosphorus. Sample sites were stratified on the basis of aspect and elevation, soil type, forest type and management and the strata were compared to determine the influenc...
متن کاملSoil erosion by assessing hydrothermal conditions of its formation
Soil erosion is one of the vital factors contributing to the loss of fertility and environmental degradation. Generally accepted diagnostics of eroded soils is based on comparison of the sloping soils profile depth with the watershed soils. In this case, there is a separate problem of slope soils with a naturally shortened profile and eroded soils. Formation of the soil’s natura...
متن کاملStress-Strain Behaviour of Completely Decomposed Granite in Both Triaxial and Plane Strain Conditions
Most of the field problems in geotechnical engineering are in three dimensional state or close to a plane strain condition. Strength and deformation properties of soils in plane strain condition are considerably different from those in an axisymmetric condition. Many researchers have investigated the behaviour of soils under a plane strain condition. However, most of the previous studies have c...
