چکیده

Central venous catheterisation was first performed in 1929when Werner Frossman, a German doctor, inserted a ureteric catheter into his antecubital vein. He then walked to the radiography department so that the catheter could be guided into his right ventricle using fluoroscopy. Since then, central venous access has become amainstay of modern clinical practice. An estimated 200 000 central venous catheters were inserted in the United Kingdom in 1994, and the figure is probably even higher today. Clinicians frommost medical disciplines will encounter patients with these catheters. Despite the benefits of central venous lines to patients and clinicians, more than 15% of patients will have a catheter related complication. This review will provide an overview of central venous catheters and insertion techniques, and it will consider the prevention and management of common complications. What are central venous catheters?

Background and Objectives: Improving nurses’ adherance with nursing standard catheter care is needed to enhance the quality of central venous catheters care. This study aimed to compare the effect of collaborative teaching method and lecture method on nursesing care of Central venous catheters. Materials and Methods: This quasi- experimental pretest-post test design study was conducted...

The successful withdrawal of a migrated central venous catheter

Background: Central venous catheters (CVCs) have been used widely in clinics. These catheters are also recommended for children and infants receiving chemotherapy and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and etc. In this paper, we present migrated fractured control line of the heart of a girl. Case Presentation: A 2.5 year old girl with migrated of the fractured central line into the heart. In the ...

Survey of a Practical Approach to Central Venous Catheterization in Pediatric Patients

Background Central venous catheter (CVC) is used for measuring hemodynamic variables, transfusion of blood, fluids and medications when peripheral vascular lack sufficiency. Unfortunately CVC is associated with many complications ranging from anxiety and discomfort for the patient to severe mechanical side effects such as arterial lacerations, pleural and pericardial injury as well as infection...

Central or peripheral catheters for initial venous access of ICU patients: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES The vast majority of ICU patients require some form of venous access. There are no evidenced-based guidelines concerning the use of either central or peripheral venous catheters, despite very different complications. It remains unknown which to insert in ICU patients. We investigated the rate of catheter-related insertion or maintenance complications in two strategies: one favoring t...

Use of peripherally inserted central catheters as an alternative to central catheters in neurocritical care units.

BACKGROUND Patients in neurological critical care units often have lengthy stays that require extended vascular access and invasive hemodynamic monitoring. The traditional approach for these patients has relied heavily on central venous and pulmonary artery catheters. The aim of this study was to evaluate peripherally inserted central catheters as an alternative to central venous catheters in n...

Infectious risk associated with arterial catheters compared with central venous catheters.

BACKGROUND Scheduled replacement of central venous catheters and, by extension, arterial catheters, is not recommended because the daily risk of catheter-related infection is considered constant over time after the first catheter days. Arterial catheters are considered at lower risk for catheter-related infection than central venous catheters in the absence of conclusive evidence. OBJECTIVES ...
