Keynan, A. (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and H. O. Halvorson. Calcium dipicolinic acid-induced germination of Bacillus cereus spores. J. Bacteriol. 83:100-105. 1962.-The germination of spores of Bacillus cereus strain T can be initiated by calcium dipicolinic acid. The kinetics of germination are characterized by a long lag period followed by a rapid loss of refractility. The lag period displays the temperature dependence of a metabolic reaction, whereas the rate of germination is relatively independent of temperature. Germination induced by calcium dipicolinic acid is insensitive to l-alanine analogues, is sensitive to metabolic poisons, and proceeds without a detectable activation stage. It was concluded that calcium dipicolinic acid-induced germination has a metabolic basis and differs, at least in its initial phases, from l-alanine-induced germination.

Bacteriol. 83:395-399. 1962.-When the dipicolinic acid content of spores of Bacillus cereus strain T is reduced from 7.5 to 2 or 3%, the spores germinate spontaneously after heat activation and are sluggish in their response to l-alanine and o...

The biphasic nature of germination curves of individual Bacillus cereus T spores was further characterized by assessing the effects of temperature, concentration of germinants, and some inorganic cations on microgermination. Temperature was shown to affect both phases of microgermination as well as the microlag period, whereas the concentration of l-alanine and supplementation with adenosine ex...
متن کاملInduced release of dipicolinic acid from spores of Bacillus megaterium.
Conditions under which dipicolinic acid may be released from bacterial spores probably relate to the chemical state of the dipicolinic acid in the spore, to its physical location in the spore, and to its influence on the physiological properties of the spore. The latter aspect embraces the relation between release of dipicolinic acid and the viability of the spore, its heat resistance, and its ...
متن کاملInvolvement of the spore coat in germination of Bacillus cereus T spores.
Bacillus cereus T spores were prepared on fortified nutrient agar, and the spore coat and outer membrane were extracted by 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulfate-100 mM dithiothreitol in 0.1 M sodium chloride (SDS-DTT) at pH 10.5 (coat-defective spores). Coat-defective spores in L-alanine plus adenosine germinated slowly and to a lesser extent than spores not treated with SDS-DTT, as determined by decreas...
متن کاملRegulation of dipicolinic acid biosynthesis in sporulating Bacillus cereus. Characterization of enzymic changes and analysis of mutants.
Some of the early enzymes in the lysine-biosynthetic pathway also function for dipicolinic acid synthesis in sporulating Bacillus cereus T. 1. The first enzyme, aspartokinase, loses its sensitivity to feedback inhibition by lysing. This change occurs before the time of dipicolinic acid synthesis but at a time when diaminopimelic acid is required for spore cortex formation. 2. A possible regulat...
