چکیده

Module-Attribute Representation of Verbal Semantics (MARVS) is a theory of the representation of verbal semantics that is based on Mandarin Chinese data (Huang et al. 2000). In the MARVS theory, there are two different types of modules: Event Structure Modules and Role Modules. There are also two sets of attributes: Event-Internal Attributes and Role-Internal Attributes, which are linked to the Event Structure Module and the Role Module, respectively. In this study, we focus on four transitive verbs as chi “eat”, wan2 “play”, huan4 “change” and shao1 “burn” and the explore their event structures by the MARVS theory. Keyword: MARVS, event structure, event structure modules, intransitive verb 1. 前言 動詞詞義的模組屬性表徵 (The Module-Attribute Representation of Verbal Semantics (MARVS)) 理論是一種基於中文語料的動詞詞義表徵的理論。在 MARVS 理論中,有兩個不同型態的模組:事件結構模組和論元角色模組,他們 又與兩種不同的屬性連結,其一是事件內部屬性和論元角色內部屬性。黃等人 (2000)發現事件模組的組合成分和證實性的詞彙語義屬性,這是可以概括整個自 然語義類的。 ___________________________________________________________________________ Proceedings of 12th Chinese Lexical Semantics Workshop

Objecthood: an Event Structure Perspective

The notion 'object' 1 has proved useful in the description of grammatical phenomena in and across languages as it picks out a set of noun phrases characterized by a convergence of what Keenan (1976) calls behavioral and coding properties. Concomitantly, this notion has even been taken as a primitive within certain approaches to linguistic representation (e.g. Relational Grammar, Lexical Functio...

"Really? She blicked the baby?": two-year-olds learn combinatorial facts about verbs by listening.

Children use syntax to guide verb learning. We asked whether the syntactic structure in which a novel verb occurs is meaningful to children even without a concurrent scene from which to infer the verb's semantic content. In two experiments, 2-year-olds observed dialogues in which interlocutors used a new verb in transitive ("Jane blicked the baby!") or intransitive ("Jane blicked!") sentences. ...

Event Selection and Coercion of Two Verbs of Ingestion: a Marvs Perspective

Event semantics in general and event type coercion in particular have been a challenging yet rewarding topic in verbal semantics (Pustejovsky, 1995). However, there have been few corpus-based empirical accounts discussing the range of event type coercions based on the lexical meanings of the verbs. In this paper, we explore the possible types of event coercions for two verbs of ingestion in Man...

If You Want A Quick Kiss, Make It Count: How Choice Of Syntactic Construction Affects Event Construal

When we hear an event description, our construal of the event is not only based on the lexical items in the message, but also on the message’s syntactic structure. This has been well-studied in the domains of how listeners conceptualize causation, roles of event participants, or object properties, depending on syntactic choices. Less studied are subtle aspects of the construal of temporality an...

MARVS Revisited: Incorporating Sense Distribution and Mutual Information into Near-Synonym Analyses

In MARVS (Module-Attribute Representation of Verbal Semantics), verbs are differentiated based on eventive information, which is comprised of event modules and role modules. Huang et al. (2000) used MARVS to examine near-synonyms and suggested that it can highlight the difference between synonymous sets. This paper suggests that the operational steps underlying a MARVS analysis can be improved ...
