The impact of the observation model on the Cramer-Rao bound for carrier phase and frequency synchronization

چکیده
This contribution considers the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) related to the joint estimation of the carrier phase and frequency of a noisy linearly modulated signal with random data symbols, using the correct continuous-time model of the received signal. We compare our results with the existing results obtained from a (commonly used) simplified discrete-time model of the matched filter output samples [1,2,3], that ignores useful signal reduction and ISI caused by nonzero frequency offset. We show that both models yield the same CRB for phase estimation. As far as frequency estimation is concerned, we point out that (i) the correct observation model yields the smaller CRB, and (ii) the difference between the CRBs resulting from the two models is apparent only at very small SNR. This indicates that at practical SNR values, the frequency offset affects the likelihood function mainly through the signal rotation (rather than signal magnitude) at the matched filter output. Improved Cramer-Rao Inequality for Randomly Censored Data
As an application of the improved Cauchy-Schwartz inequality due to Walker (Statist. Probab. Lett. (2017) 122:86-90), we obtain an improved version of the Cramer-Rao inequality for randomly censored data derived by Abdushukurov and Kim (J. Soviet. Math. (1987) pp. 2171-2185). We derive a lower bound of Bhattacharya type for the mean square error of a parametric function based on randomly censor...
متن کاملThe true Cramer-Rao bound for phase-independent carrier frequency estimation from a PSK signal
This contribution considers the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) related to phase-independent carrier frequency estimation from a noisy PSK signal. Instead of estimating the frequency jointly with the carrier phase, we treat the phase as a nuisance parameter. Ideal symbol timing is assumed. Both cases of known data (training sequence) and random data are considered. We show that frequency estimation irre...
متن کاملOn the True Cramer-Rao Lower Bound for the DA Joint Estimation of Carrier Phase and Timing Offsets
This paper concerns the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRB) for the data-aided (DA) timing and/or phase recovery, i.e., the synchronization parameter acquisition is aided by a training sequence known to the receiver. For the DA parameter estimation, the CRB typically varies with the training sequence. This indicates that different training sequences offer fundamental different performance. In this man...

In this contribution we consider the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for the estimation of the synchronization parameters of a noisy linearly modulated signal with random data symbols. We explore three scenarios, i.e., (i) joint estimation of carrier phase, carrier frequency and time delay, irrespective of the data; (ii) joint estimation of carrier frequency and time delay, irrespective of the data and ...
متن کاملThe modified Cramer-Rao bound and its application to synchronization problems
We introduce the modified Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) which, like the hue CRB, is a lower bound to the error variance of any parameter estimator. The modified CRB proves useful when, in addition to the parameter to be estimated, the observed data also depend on other unwanted parameters. The relationship between the modified and true CRB is established and applications are discussed regarding the es...
