چکیده

Estimates of total bird numbers help to evaluate the importance of a site for a species within a national and international framework, and also the relative importance of each country for that species which helps to prioritise conservation action and management. Non-breeding waterbirds, which are generally gregarious in nature, have been used to identify the importance of more than 80 wetland sites across Ireland in an international context, and thereby justify their designation as Special Protection Areas under the European Union Birds Directive. Waterbird numbers in Ireland were first monitored at a national scale during the early 1970s, and the first all-Ireland estimates were presented by Hutchinson (1979). A follow-up census during the 1980s resulted in a revision of these estimates (Sheppard 1993) and showed that there had been

Waterbird populations on non-estuarine coasts in Ireland: results of the 2006/07 Non-Estuarine Coastal Waterbird Survey (NEWS)

The importance of Ireland’s wetlands for waterbirds is well documented (Crowe 2005, Boland & Crowe 2012), and the most recent population estimates indicate that more than one million wildfowl and waders winter in Ireland (Crowe et al. 2008). The Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) in Northern Ireland and Britain, together with the equivalent scheme in the Republic of Ireland, the Irish Wetland Bird Surv...

Irish Wetland Bird Survey: Results of Waterbird Monitoring in Ireland

Ireland supports a high diversity and large numbers of high latitude-nesting waterfowl during the non-breeding season. Located at the southern edge of the major flyways of many species, its mild climate ensures that feeding is rarely interrupted by freezing conditions. Some species migrate here, while others use Ireland as a stopover site, while en route to more southerly wintering areas. We th...

A review of Ireland's waterbirds, with emphasis on wintering migrants and reference to H5N1 avian influenza

Ireland is characterised by its diversity and large abundance of wetlands, making it attractive to a wide variety of waterbirds throughout the year. This paper presents an overview of Ireland's waterbirds, including ecological factors relevant to the potential introduction, maintenance, transmission and spread of infectious agents, including the H5N1 avian influenza virus, in Ireland. Particula...

Comparison and Assessment of Aerial and Ground Estimates of Waterbird Colonies

Aerial surveys are often used to quantify sizes of waterbird colonies; however, these surveys would benefit from a better understanding of associated biases. We compared estimates of breeding pairs of waterbirds, in colonies across southern Louisiana, USA, made from the ground, fixed-wing aircraft, and a helicopter. We used a marked-subsample method for ground-counting colonies to obtain estima...

Rapid climate driven shifts in wintering distributions of three common waterbird species.

Climate change is predicted to cause changes in species distributions and several studies report margin range shifts in some species. However, the reported changes rarely concern a species' entire distribution and are not always linked to climate change. Here, we demonstrate strong north-eastwards shifts in the centres of gravity of the entire wintering range of three common waterbird species a...
