Mathematical Giftedness in the Brain
نویسنده
چکیده
Humans, other mammals, and birds, all have a well-evolved sense of the numerosity of small sets of objects. However, our brains did not evolve to do mathematics. Instead, our brains learn mathematics at school by coordinating neural interconnectivity. Doing mathematics critically involves: • the lateral frontal cortices to support working memory; • the temporal cortices (and hippocampus) to reconstruct knowledge from long term memory; • the orbitofrontal cortices and the anterior cingulate for decision making, in turn mediated by regions within the limbic sub-cortex; • areas of the fusiform gyri and temporal lobes for sequencing of symbolic

How brain research can contribute to the evaluation of mathematical giftedness
In this paper we suggest that instruments of neuro-cognitive research enable the evaluation of giftedness in mathematics. We start with a literature review on the related topics presented so as to situate our suggestions within the existing research on giftedness and excellence in mathematics. This literature review allows us later to discuss our findings, which are based on neurocognitive data...
متن کاملThe origins and ends of giftedness.
Five issues about giftedness are discussed. First, the origins of giftedness are explored. The view that giftedness is entirely a product of training is critiqued. There is indirect evidence for atypical brain organization and innate talent in gifted children: Many gifted children and savants have enhanced right-hemisphere development, language-related difficulties, and autoimmune disorders. Se...
متن کاملCognitive and Neural Correlates of Mathematical Giftedness in Adults and Children: A Review
Most mathematical cognition research has focused on understanding normal adult function and child development as well as mildly and moderately impaired mathematical skill, often labeled developmental dyscalculia and/or mathematical learning disability. In contrast, much less research is available on cognitive and neural correlates of gifted/excellent mathematical knowledge in adults and childre...
متن کاملGifted Brain and Twinning: Integrative Review of the Recent Literature
In this review, on the base of the literature data on the strong connection between high intelligence in pre/adolescents and high testosterone level in the prenatal fetus development and also on the increased concentration of testosterone in the amniotic liquid in the case of monozygotic male-twins pregnancy, the hypothesis of biologically conditioned intellectual giftedness in the monozygotic ...
متن کاملAbility grouping for mathematically gifted adolescent boys
Embedded in the contemporary issue of gifted education is the contentious notion of ability grouping. The debate surrounding appropriate educational provision for gifted students continues to argue the cognitive and affective influences of ability grouping on gifted students. While recognising the various forms of intellectual giftedness, analysis of the research about mathematically gifted stu...
