چکیده

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, a biomarker is ‘a distinctive biological or biologically derived indicator (as a metabolite) of a process, event, or condition (as aging, disease, or oil formation)’ [1]. A biomarker can be structural, such as mammography or a coronary calcium scan, or functional, such as glomerular filtration rate or blood pressure, but the term biomarker is most commonly used for describing measureable serological or circulating biological entities, such as proteins or metabolites. The purposes of measuring a biomarker vary, but include help in identification of individuals at increased risk for disease, screening for subclinical disease in asymptomatic individuals, diagnosis of existing disease in symptomatic patients, monitoring of treatment results in patients on therapy, or prognostication of recurrence or sequelae of disease. The purpose of this special issue of ‘Disease Markers’ is to give a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge regarding circulating biomarkers in cardiovascular disease. The main focus of the eight articles is the use of biomarkers in risk stratification of healthy individuals or early detection of subclinical disease, but some of the contributions also discuss other uses of biomarkers, such as prognostication in individuals with prevalent disease. In cardiovascular medicine, there is a long history of using biomarkers

The Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in the C-reactive Protein Gene: are they Biomarkers of Cardiovascular Risk?

Recent pre-clinical and clinical studies have revealed the C-reactive protein gene (CRP) is related to the degree of acute rise in plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Moreover, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the CRP gene could associate with increased risk of cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, obstructive pulmonary disease,...

میکروRNAهای گردشی، بیومارکرهای ارزشمند در مایعات بیولوژیک بدن

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are severely protected sequences and single stranded structures approximately 18 to 25 nucleotides in length. The crucial role of miRNAs has been previously proved in the regulation of the gene expression in post transcriptional modification events of messenger RNA. The precise mechanism by which miRNAs modulate translational repression of mRNAs is not fully determined. Howev...

A Review of the Function of Circulating Cell Free miRNAs as Promising Biomarkers in Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment, and Metastasis

Cell Free miRNAs are small, non-coding molecules that can be secreted into the bloodstream in very stable forms. These types of miRNAs, like intracellular miRNAs, participate in the control of many biological processes and are expressed in both natural and pathological conditions. Quantitative and qualitative changes in expression of circulating miRNAs are associated with the onset and progress...

Circulating MicroRNAs: Potential and Emerging Biomarkers for Diagnosis of Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Diseases

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are composed of a group of endogenous and noncoding small RNAs which control expression of complementary target mRNAs. The extended functions of miRNAs enhance the complexity of gene-regulatory processes in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Indeed, recent studies have shown that miRNAs are closely related to myocardial infarction, heart failure, atrial fibrillation...

microRNA-based diagnostics and therapy in cardiovascular disease-Summing up the facts.

Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) are discussed as potential disease-specific biomarkers in cardiovascular disease. Their diagnostic value has been examined in numerous studies and animal models with respect to coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infarction (MI) and the prognostic abilities of circulating miRNAs in risk stratification of future disease have been evaluated. Various miRNAs ...
