Improvisation without Representation Artificial Intelligence and Music

چکیده
The title is meant in two senses: both as a reference to the fact that contemporary freely improvised music is underrepresented in the study of AI and music; and, as a reference to the behavioral robotics research of Rodney Brooks, who famously stated that in place of computational representation, “the world is its own best model”. Brooks cites the theoretical work of Marvin Minsky as a source for his approach to designing intelligent robots. Both Minsky and Brooks describe decentralized, agent-based systems that could arguably be regarded as improvisational, in that they are designed to cope with a dynamic external world. Though neither author explicitly identifies improvisation as a key aim of their approach, some AI systems are, in fact, explicitly designed to engage in improvisation. One example is George Lewis’ Voyager, a humancomputer interactive musical improvisation system that negotiates and contributes to complex sonic environments in real time. This paper describes a new system, Adam Linson’s Odessa, that interacts with human musicians to perform freely improvised music, following Lewis’ interaction model. Odessa is designed using Brooks’ subsumption architecture, thus bypassing central representation and control in favor of a decentralized and environmentally situated approach. Automatic Interactive Music Improvization Based on Data Mining
An area of focus in music improvisation is interactive improvisation between a human and a computer system in real time. In this paper, we present a musical interactive system acting as a melody continuator. For each musical pattern given by the user, a new one is returned by the system which is built by using general patterns for both pitch and duration stored in its knowledge base. The latter...
متن کاملInvestigating the cognitive foundations of collaborative musical free improvisation: Experimental case studies using a novel application of the subsumption architecture
This thesis investigates the cognitive foundations of collaborative musical free improvisation. To explore the cognitive underpinnings of the collaborative process, a series of experimental case studies was undertaken in which expert improvisors performed with an artificial agent. The research connects ecological musicology and subsumption robotics, and builds upon insights from empirical psych...
متن کاملEIMAS 2010 Ant Colony Optimization and Evolutionary Algorithms Applied to Jazz Solo Improvisation
This paper describes an experiment of using a variant of the TSP (Traveling Salesman Problem) of ACO (Ant Colony Optimization) and automatic fitness in the evolutionary algorithm to create jazz improvisation solos. It is a subproject of our overall EJI (Evolutionary Jazz Improvisation) project, where we try to explore the inner nature of jazz music and model jazz improvisation solos and jazz ha...
متن کاملThe relation of improvisation in music & Social character of improviser
This research investigates the relation of social practices and behavior of the musician or singer with the quality of his improvisation in the field of music. Using analytic method and field study, it explores the views of two groups of interviewees in the form of two separate statistical communities. The first sample consists of outstanding teachers of music in sixties and nineties which deal...
متن کاملMusical Knowledge: What can Artificial Intelligence Bring to the Musician?
In this paper we introduce the idea of Knowledge Representation in the context of Artificial Intelligence. We explain why finding a good representation is an important issue in Artificial Intelligence research, and why music raises some particularly interesting questions. We then proceed to explain our own system for music knowledge representation, Charm.
