چکیده

Interpretation of potential and electromagnetic (EM) fields observed over 3D geological structures remains one of the most challenging problems of exploration geophysics. In this paper I present an overview of modern methods of inversion and imaging of gravity, magnetic, and EM data, which are based on new advances in regularization theory related to application of special stabilizing functionals that allow construction of both smooth images of the underground geological structures and models with sharp geological boundaries. I demonstrate that sharp boundary geophysical inversion can improve the efficiency and resolution of the inverse problem solution. I also present a new technique for resolution analysis of regularized geophysical inversion, which evaluates the spatial distribution of the upper bounds of the inverse model errors. These upper bounds of the model variations determine the actual resolution of geophysical inversion. The methods are illustrated with synthetic and practical examples of 3D inversion of potential and EM field’s data.

Approximate resistivity and susceptibility mapping from airborne electromagnetic and magnetic data, a case study for a geologically plausible porphyry copper unit in Iran

This paper describes the application of approximate methods to invert airborne magnetic data as well as helicopter-borne frequency domain electromagnetic data in order to retrieve a joint model of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity. The study area located in Semnan province of Iran consists of an arc-shaped porphyry andesite covered by sedimentary units which may have potential ...

A new method for 3-D magnetic data inversion with physical bound

Inversion of magnetic data is an important step towards interpretation of the practical data. Smooth inversion is a common technique for the inversion of data. Physical bound constraint can improve the solution to the magnetic inverse problem. However, how to introduce the bound constraint into the inversion procedure is important. Imposing bound constraint makes the magnetic data inversion a n...

3-D Inversion of gravity gradiometer data

We present the development of an algorithm for inverting multi-component gravity gradiometer data to recover three-dimensional (3-D) distributions of density contrast for salt imaging. The algorithm is a direct adaptation of the author’s earlier work on 3-D inversion of magnetic data. The underlying method is based upon a regularized inversion that constructs a density contrast distribution hav...

Rapid three-dimensional inversion of multi-transmitter electromagnetic data using the spectral Lanczos decomposition method

In this paper, we develop a new method of three-dimensional (3-D) inversion of multi-transmitter electromagnetic data. We apply the spectral Lanczos decomposition method (SLDM) in the framework of the localized quasi-linear inversion introduced by Zhdanov and Tartaras (2002 Geophys. 1. Int. 148 506-19). The SLDM makes it possible to find the regularized solution of the ill-posed inverse problem...
