چکیده
Materials and methods Data was obtained in the Elderly Project/Goiânia, a cross-sectional study comprising 132 community dwelling elderly (>60 yrs.) of Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. Muscle mass was estimated by standard methods by using dualx-ray-absortiometry (DXA) and was determined by the skeletal muscle mass index (SMI). Muscle strength was determined by Hand grip strength (hand-GS) with a dynamometer on dominant hand. Diabetes diagnose was identified by self-report or use of hypoglycemic agents. Analyses were performed in STATA 12.0. We calculated the prevalence and the difference ratio was evaluated by the Pearson chi-square test (p <0.05). This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of UFG.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with increased risks of sarcopenia and pre-sarcopenia in Chinese elderly
Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. In this study, we used a cross-sectional study with 1090 community-dwelling Chinese citizens aged 60 years and older to evaluate the association of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with the risk of sarcopenia and pre-sarcopenia. Sarcopenia was defined using the Asian Working Group fo...
متن کاملLower extremity muscle performance associated with community ambulation in elderly fallers
Background. Knowing lower extremity muscle groups associated with community ambulation functions is important for developing physical disability prevention/intervention programmes for older adults experiencing falls. We aimed to identify lower extremity muscle groups significantly associated with walking endurance, walking speed, and stepping performance among community-dwelling elderly fallers...
متن کاملSarcopenia, cardiopulmonary fitness, and physical disability in community-dwelling elderly people.
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia refers to the loss of skeletal muscle mass with aging. It is believed to be associated with functional impairment and physical disability. OBJECTIVE The purposes of this study were: (1) to compare the physical activity, muscle strength (force-generating capacity), cardiopulmonary fitness, and physical disability in community-dwelling elderly people with sarcopenia, borde...
متن کاملAccelerated loss of skeletal muscle strength in older adults with type 2 diabetes: the health, aging, and body composition study.
OBJECTIVE It has been shown that adults with either long-standing type 1 or type 2 diabetes had lower skeletal muscle strength than nondiabetic adults in cross-sectional studies. The aim of the study was to investigate longitudinal changes of muscle mass and strength in community-dwelling older adults with and without type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We examined leg and arm muscle...
متن کاملPredicting ADL disability in community-dwelling elderly people using physical frailty indicators: a systematic review
BACKGROUND Disability in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) is an adverse outcome of frailty that places a burden on frail elderly people, care providers and the care system. Knowing which physical frailty indicators predict ADL disability is useful in identifying elderly people who might benefit from an intervention that prevents disability or increases functioning in daily life. The objective o...
