Production of Lactic Acid from Glycerol by Applying an Alkaline Hydrothermal Process Using Homogeneous Catalysts and High Glycerol Concentration
نویسندگان
چکیده
The production of lactic acid from glycerol by means of the alkaline hydrothermal process was evaluated using high concentrations of glycerol. The operating conditions that influence the hydrothermal process were studied. Temperature (250 280 °C), catalyst to glycerol molar ratio (0.05 to 0.15), and water to glycerol volumetric ratio (0.8 to 1.5) were evaluated, as well as the use of NaOH and KOH as catalysts. A concentration of lactic acid of 122 g/L was obtained at 260 °C, 0.04 NaOH to glycerol molar ratio, 1.0 water to glycerol volumetric ratio and 3 h of reaction using crude glycerol as raw material. The results showed higher lactic acid concentration and productivity than the fermentative process and the hydrothermal process carried out using low initial glycerol concentration.

Biodiesel has become an attractive fuel recently, because it is renewable, non-toxic, biodegradable, environmentally friendly, etc. With the increase in the production of biodiesel, the problem of disposing crude glycerol, which is produced as main by-product from biodiesel process such as transesterification, has been raised. Therefore, we have been developing a new green technology-Hydrotherm...

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), Glycerol (G) and sunflower oil blends with varying concentration were subjected to enzymatic esterification using a 1, 3- specific immobilized lipase. CLA was used as acyl due to its purported health benefits. The transesterified lipids were evaluated for free fatty acids (FFA) and composition of fatty acids by gas chromatography. Lipozyme RM IM is preferred for ...

Production of lactic acid from glycerol is a cascade catalytic procedure using multifunctional catalysts combined with oxidative and acidic catalytic sites. Therefore, a series of silver-exchanged phosphomolybdic acid catalysts (AgxH3-xPMo12O40, x = 1 ~ 3, abbreviated as AgxPMo) was designed and applied in glycerol oxidation with O2 as an oxidant to produce lactic acid (LA) without adding any b...
