Interaction of Cooled Ion Beams with Internal Fiber Targets

چکیده
Beam lifetime considerations and the limits of electron cooling restrict the thickness of internal targets to 1015 atoms/cm2. Gas jets or diffuse gas targets are possible schemes, but require a major technical effort to maintain sufficient vacuum adjacent to the target region. In addition, some important target materials are not available as gases. Dust targets have been used successfully, but are comparable to gas targets in the required technical effort. Fiber targets are a relatively easy way to present certain target nuclei (such as 12C, 28 Si, 5 4 C ~ ) to the stored beam. For fiber targets the idea is that the passage of a beam ion through a relatively thick object can be tolerated as long as the particle misses the fiber often enough. This allows sufficient cooling in many turns around the ring. For simplicity we consider a vertical fiber of linear density 6 (atoms/cm) positioned at the center of the stored beam, whose horizontal width is 2ao. Then the average target thickness is1 2 t d = rao

Investigation of proton elastic scattering on Zn in inverse kinematics using a stored ESR beam interacting with an internal CH4 target
The investigation of light-ion induced direct reactions in inverse kinematics, using stored and cooled radioactive beams, interacting with internal H, He, etc. gas-jet targets, bears a large potential for nuclear structure and astrophysics studies on exotic nuclei. In particular, this technique enables, as compared to investigations at external targets, high resolution measurements down to very...

The dynamics of charged particle beams interacting with laser beams and material targets in storage rings is presented. Formulas for the radiative damping, quantum excitation and equilibrium parameters of ion and electron beams determined by the backward rayleigh and backward compton scattering are derived. General case is considered. It takes into account the possibility of the periodical disp...
متن کاملParameters of Electron Cooled Ion and Antiproton Beams in the NESR
The NESR ring of the FAIR project [1] will store highly charged radioactive and stable ion beams for internal experiments and decelerate ions and antiprotons for transfer to FLAIR. A powerful electron cooling system has been designed [2], covering the full energy range (740-4 MeV/u) for ions and allowing intermediate cooling in the range 800-30 MeV during the deceleration of antiprotons. It wil...

متن کاملEnergy Gain of Magnetized Cylindrical D-T Targets in Fast Ignition Fusion
In recent years, many different plans have been considered to use the nuclear energy gained from inertial confinement fusion (ICF) as attempts to obtain high energy efficiencies. In conventional ICF methods, a small amount (about mg) of the deuterium–tritium compound is confined in a small spherical chamber of a few millimeters in radius and compressed by laser or heavy ion beams with powers in...
