چکیده

We want to create interactive surface design systems which provide intuitive interfaces to parametric surface representations. In this paper, we show how the technique of Differential Manipulation can be used in constructing such interfaces. It allows surface manipulation issues to be treated separately from surface representation issues. Arbitrary differentiable functions of representation parameters can be used to control the surface. Constraint and optimization techniques can be used to enhance interaction and control many surface degrees of freedom at once. We provide examples of the technique’s use in our interactive surface modeling program. electronicmail: [email protected] electronicmail: [email protected] This research was sponsored in part by Apple Computer, Siemens Corporation and Silicon Graphics Incorporated. Surface Learning with Applications to Lipreading Surface Learning with Applications to Lipreading

Most connectionist research has focused on learning mappings from one space to another (eg. classiication and regression). This paper introduces the more general task of learning constraint surfaces. It describes a simple but powerful architecture for learning and manipulating nonlinear surfaces from data. We demonstrate the technique on low dimensional synthetic surfaces and compare it to near...

Collaborative, Contact-based Schemas for Robot Righting utilizing Hull Shape Design

Nature’s self-organizing teams have long inspired engineering researchers. Imitating birds and fish, researchers built swarms that could keep formation via elegant decentralized control algorithms. Inspired by ants, they applied formation keeping to carrying loads as a mobile robot team. In this work, we further specialize this collaborative manipulation to manipulating teammates, thereby creat...

Global integration of local color differences in transparency perception: An fMRI study.

In normal viewing, the visual system effortlessly assigns approximately constant attributes of color and shape to perceived objects. A fundamental component of this process is the compensation for illuminant variations and intervening media to recover reflectance properties of natural surfaces. We exploited the phenomenon of transparency perception to explore the cortical regions implicated in ...

Nanonails: a simple geometrical approach to electrically tunable superlyophobic surfaces.

In this work, dynamically tunable, superlyophobic surfaces capable of undergoing a transition from profound superlyophobic behavior to almost complete wetting have been demonstrated for the first time. In the initial state, with no voltage applied, these surfaces exhibit contact angles as high as 150 degrees for a wide variety of liquids with surface tensions ranging from 21.8 mN/m (ethanol) to...
