Cokeromyces recurvatus in a Papanicolaou test: An exceedingly rare finding that can be mistaken for Paracoccidioides brasiliensis

چکیده
Cokeromyces recurvatus is a zygomycetes yeast form that is very rarely detected in Papanicolaou (Pap) tests, in which it typically represents an innocuous colonizer. Its morphology closely resembles that of the better known Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, which can disseminate widely and cause clinically significant disease. We present a case of C. recurvatus detected in a cervical liquid-based preparation obtained from a 38-year old healthy woman. Careful cytomorphologic evaluation, in combination with culture and molecular techniques, was utilized to make a diagnosis and prevent the misdiagnosis of P. brasiliensis.

Cokeromyces recurvatus Poitras was isolated from an endocervical specimen obtained from a 37-year-old, insulin-dependent diabetic. The patient's diabetic condition had been well controlled for 10 years, and she had no other known medical problem. This is only the fourth time that this zygomycete has been recovered from a human source. While there was no evidence of tissue invasion in the presen...

BACKGROUND Paracoccidioidomycosis, a chronic granulomatous fungal disease caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis yeast cells affects mainly rural workers, albeit recently cases in immunosuppressed individuals has been reported. Protective immune response against P. brasiliensis is dependent on the activity of helper T cells especially IFN-γ-producing Th1 cells. It has been proposed that Paraco...

Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is a thermal dimorphic fungus which in the host environment exhibits a multinucleated and multibudding yeast form. The cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying these phenotypes remain to be clarified, mostly due to the absence of efficient classical genetic and molecular techniques. Here we describe a method for gene expression knockdown in P. brasiliensis by a...

Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and Paracoccidioides lutzii are fungi causing paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), an autochthonous systemic mycosis found in Latin America. These microorganisms contain a multitude of molecules that may be associated with the complex interaction of the fungus with the host. Here, we identify the enzyme dihydrolipoyl dehydrogenase (DLD) as an exoantigen from P. brasiliens...

CLSI method M27-A3 is not available for use with dimorphic fungi, such as those of the Paracoccidioides genus. In this study, we developed a microdilution method and added the alamarBlue reagent to test the responses of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and Paracoccidioides lutzii against amphotericin B and itraconazole antifungals. The test proved to be sensitive, practical, and inexpensive and ca...
