Cotes, J. E., Dabbs, J. M., Hall, A. M., Axford, A. T., and Laurence, K. M. (1973). Thorax, 28, 709-715. Lung volumes, ventilatory capacity, and transfer factor in healthy British boy and girl twins. Normal values are reported for the lung volumes, ventilatory capacity, and transfer factor of 212 healthy British twin children aged 8 to 16 years. The boys and the girls share a common relationship to height for the residual volume, peak expiratory flow rate, and Kco (transfer factor per litre of lung volume). For the inspiratory capacity and the transfer factor, also its membrane component (Dm), the values for the boys exceed those for the girls by, on average, 10%. This difference may be due, at least in part, to the boys taking more exercise.

Ventilatory function in the Eisenmenger syndrome.
Ventilatory function and carbon monoxide transfer factor were studied in nine adult patients with post-tricuspid intracardiac defects and the Eisenmenger syndrome. A consistent mild defect of ventilatory function was found, with raised residual volume and closing capacity and reduction of other lung volumes and maximal expiratory flows. Maximal expiratory flow was particularly reduced at low lu...
متن کاملLung function after exposure to barley dust.
Six men handling barley were followed up over two working days and their flow volume curves were measured every two hours. All experienced falls in ventilatory capacity of up to 800 ml with changes in the shape of the flow volume curve in five men. Five volunteers not previously exposed to barley dust sat in a silo for two hours. Decreases in ventilatory capacity ranging from 200 ml to 800 ml w...
متن کاملEffect of pattern and severity of respiratory muscle weakness on carbon monoxide gas transfer and lung volumes.
In clinical practice, an elevated carbon monoxide (CO) transfer coefficient (KCO) and restrictive ventilatory defect are taken as features of respiratory muscle weakness (RMW). However, the authors hypothesised that both pattern and severity of RMW effect gas transfer and lung volumes. Measurements of CO transfer and lung volumes were performed in patients with isolated diaphragm weakness (n=10...
متن کاملLung function in healthy British women.
The forces expiratory volume, total lung capacity, transfer factor (diffusing capacity), and their subdivisions have been measured in 113 healthy British women aged 27 to 74 years of whom 47 were current smokers and 66 were lifetime non-smokers. The results have been analysed in terms of age, stature, mass, body fat, and smoking. In addition to their relation to stature and to age, the inspirat...
متن کاملPulmonary involvement in sle.
Sir, Grennan et al.1 recently reported in 22 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (5 with respiratory symptoms), a restrictive ventilatory defect or reduction in diffusing capacity for CO. Their paper is interesting but we should like to make a few comments: (a) Only 3 tests of lung function were employed: VC, FEVi%/FVC, and transfer factor. (b) Most patients were receiving corticosteroid...
