Pluto ’ s Spectrum from 1 . 0 to 4 . 2 μ m : Implications for Surface Properties

چکیده

We present spectra of Pluto’s anti-Charon hemisphere obtained from the Keck and Subaru telescopes from 2.8 to 4.2 μm. Combined with 1 2.5 μm spectra from the IRTF telescope, this collective data set lets us constrain several surface frost properties. The surface area of pure nitrogen frost (as opposed to nitrogen with dissolved methane) is constrained to be 6% or less. The ratio of pure to dilute (in nitrogen) methane frost is best fit by a ratio of 3 to 4. The grain size of pure methane is constrained to be near 200 μm. We were not able to constrain the temperature of pure methane. An additional surface component with spectral properties similar to ‘Titan tholin’ was necessary to fit the entire 1 to 4.2 μm spectrum; our best-fit model requires 21% of Pluto’s anti-Charon hemisphere (by area) to be this Titan-tholin component. Contrary to Sasaki et al.’s (2005) spectra of Pluto’s sub-Charon hemisphere, we find no evidence for other hydrocarbons in the 3-3.3 μm region. Subject headings: planets and satellites: Pluto

The Surface Age of Sputnik Planum, Pluto, Must Be Less than 10 Million Years

Data from the New Horizons mission to Pluto show no craters on Sputnik Planum down to the detection limit (2 km for low resolution data, 625 m for high resolution data). The number of small Kuiper Belt Objects that should be impacting Pluto is known to some degree from various astronomical surveys. We combine these geological and telescopic observations to make an order of magnitude estimate th...

In the region of large μ+μ− invariant mass, the decay spectrum of KL → μ +μ−γ deviates from the Dalitz pair spectrum, as a result of interference between conversion (KL → γ ∗γ → μ+μ−γ) and bremsstrahlung amplitudes. The latter is proportional to the KL → μ +μ− matrix element, whose 2γ-absorptive part appears to dominate the observed KL → μ +μ− decay rate. We examine the extent to which a scruti...

Characterization of the spectrum of irregular boundary value problem for the Sturm-Liouville operator

We consider the spectral problem generated by the Sturm-Liouville equation with an arbitrary complex-valued potential q(x) ∈ L2(0, π) and irregular boundary conditions. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of complex numbers to be the spectrum of such an operator. In the present paper, we consider the eigenvalue problem for the SturmLiouvulle equation u − q(x)u + λu = 0 (1...

Norm Discontinuity and Spectral Properties of Ornstein-uhlenbeck Semigroups

Let E be a real Banach space. We study the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup P = {P (t)}t≥0 associated with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator Lf(x) = 1 2 TrQDf(x) + 〈Ax,Df(x)〉, x ∈ E. Here Q ∈ L (E, E) is a positive symmetric operator and A is the generator of a C0-semigroup S = {S(t)}t≥0 on E. Under the assumption that P admits an invariant measure μ∞ we prove that if S is eventually compact and the ...

Orbits and photometry of Pluto ’ s satellites : Charon , S / 2005 P 1 and S / 2005 P 2

We present new astrometry of Pluto’s three satellites from images taken of the Pluto system during 2002-3 with the High Resolution Camera (HRC) mode of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. The observations were designed to produce an albedo map of Pluto but they also contain images of Charon and the two recently discovered satellites, S/2005 P1 and S/2...
