چکیده

benign hepatomas in CSH male mice is strikingly lower among animals fed a semi-purified ration containing 9 per cent casein than among those fed a diet containing 18 per cent casein as the principal source of protein (11). From the viewpoint of nutrition, the main differences between the diet containing 9 per cent and that with 18 per cent casein are (a) the total amount of protein and, more particularly, (b) the amount of specific essen tial amino acids, chiefly methionine and cystine ; in a diet with 9 per cent casein these sulfur-contain ing amino acids are not present in amounts optimal for the growth of mice or the efficient utilization of the ingested ration. The following cx periments were performed to determine whether either of these factors was responsible for the ob served difference in hepatoma formation.

by injections of hormones6 (20), by theophylline,6 or by adrenalectomy6 (20). These studies have emphasized the diversity of enzyme patterns and adaptive responses present in transplantable rat hepatomas with a wide spectrum of growth rates (6). Recently, a series of transplantable mouse hepatomas of spontaneous origin has been developed, the occurrence of which was first reported by Andervont ...

Relative influences of natural and semipurified diets on tumor formation in mice.

For a number of years this laboratory has been engaged in examining the influence of nutrition on the formation of tumors in mice. Before 1945 these studies were conducted with rations composed of natural foodstuffs, the principal basic components being either wheat grain or Purina Fox Chow meal and milk powder. To these were added cornstarch and partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, which wer...

The Effect of Rice Diets on the Formation of Induced and Spontaneous Hepatomas in Mice*

By 1935, various investigators (9) principally Kinosita and his co-workers had established the hepato-carcinogenic activity of o-aminoazotoluene and N,N-dimethyl-p-aminoazobenzene. These azo dyes, administered in the diet or by subcutaneous injection, elicit changes--including neoplasms--in the livers of rats and mice and perhaps in the livers of other species. Subsequently it was established t...
