Habituation of Predator Inspection and Boldness in the Guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

چکیده

--This study examined habituation of the predator inspection behavior in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) and its relationship with boldness (open field locomotion). Two different strategies were discovered: (1) initial inspection of a predatorlike fish, correlated with boldness; (2) subsequent surveillance, governed by a random underlying process and unrelated with boldness. The surveillance inspection is probably linked with anti-predator vigilance. Possible implications to betweenpopulation variation in inspection behavior are discussed. Female mating preference for bold males in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata.

Although females prefer to mate with brightly colored males in numerous species, the benefits accruing to such females are virtually unknown. According to one hypothesis of sexual selection theory, if the expression of costly preferred traits in males (such as conspicuous colors) is proportional to the male's overall quality or reveals his quality, a well-developed trait should indicate good co...

The effect of dietary oxymetholone on growth, survival and reproduction of guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

To check the ability of guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata) to receive high dietary doses of oxymetholone hormone and its effects on growth parameters, survival and reproduction, 300 fish at the age of 10 weeks, with an average weight of 0.38 ± 0.09 g were randomly assigned to 5 treatments and 3 replications in 15 glass aquaria (100 liters volume). Hormone levels were considered as 5 different dos...

Pathogenicity of viral nervous necrosis virus for Guppy fish, Poecilia reticulata

The pathogenicity of a Nervous Necrosis Virus isolate obtained from naturally infected Golden grey mullet (Liza auratus) suffering serious mortalities in Iranian coastline water of the Caspian Sea was investigated for first time. An experimental infection has been performed using three groups, two experimental groups and one control group of Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) with mean weight 0.47±0.0...

Effect of waterborne copper oxide nanoparticles and copper ions on guppy (Poecilia reticulata): Bioaccumulation and histopathology

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) and copper ions (Cu++) on guppy (Poecilia reticulata), in order to assess Cu uptake in the gill, and histopathology of gill and intestinal organs in semi-static regimes for 10 days. Guppy fish were assigned into three groups; one control group, and two experimental groups receiving 20 µg/l of eith...

Behavioural responses of feral and domestic guppies (Poecilia reticulata) to predators and their cues.

Predation is an important factor during adaptation to novel environments, and the feralisation of introduced domestic species often involves responding appropriately to allopatric predators despite a background of domestication and inbreeding. Twenty years ago, domestic guppies were introduced to a semi-natural environment at Burgers' Zoo in the Netherlands, where they have since been exposed t...
