Experiments on Gradient Limits for Normal Conducting Accelerators
نویسنده
چکیده
The accelerating gradient is one of the crucial parameters affecting the design, construction and cost of nextgeneration linear accelerators. For a specified final energy, the gradient sets the accelerator length, and for a given accelerating structure and pulse repetition rate, it determines power consumption. In this paper experimental results and problems related to breakdown damage, pulsed heating, application of new materials, as well as difference between standing wave (SW) and traveling wave (TW) structures will be discussed.

Status of High Power Tests of Normal Conducting Single-cell Structures
We report the results of ongoing high power tests of single-cell standing wave structures. These tests are part of an experimental and theoretical study of rf breakdown in normal conducting structures at 11.4 GHz. The goal of this study is to determine the maximum gradient possibilities for normal-conducting rf powered particle beam accelerators. The test setup consists of reusable mode launche...
متن کاملSuperconducting cavities for accelerators
Superconducting cavities have been in operation in accelerators for 25 years. In the last decade many installations in storage rings and linacs have been completed. Meanwhile, nearly 1 km of active cavity length is in operation in accelerators. Large-scale applications of superconducting radiofrequency systems are planned for future e+e− linear colliders and proton linacs. Superconducting cavit...
متن کاملEffect of RF Parameters on Breakdown Limits in High-Vacuum X-Band Structures
RF breakdown is one of the major factors determining performance of high power rf components and rf sources. RF breakdown limits working power and produces irreversible surface damage. The breakdown limit depends on the rf circuit, structure geometry, and rf frequency. It is also a function of the input power, pulse width, and surface electric and magnetic fields. In this paper we discuss multi...
متن کاملCalculation of Eigenmodes in Superconducting Cavities on Ape–supercomputers Using a Software Interface to Mafia
To design modern accelerators a profound knowledge of eigenmodes of RF-cavities is required. For normal conducting as well as for superconducting cavities MAFIA is a well established tool to determine the eigenmodes by numerical means. However, the 3-dimensional treatment of multicell cavities lacks from available computer power on a usual high end workstation. Therefore the present approach us...
متن کاملCyclotrons and Fixed-field Alternating-gradient Accelerators
This article describes particle accelerators using magnets whose field strengths are fixed in time to steer and focus ion beams in a spiral orbit so that they pass between (and can be accelerated by) the same electrodes many times. The first example of such a device, Lawrence’s cyclotron, revolutionized nuclear physics in the 1930s, but was limited in energy by relativistic effects. To overcome...
