چکیده

We consider the evaluation of first-order queries over classes of databases with local bounded expansion. This class was introduced by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez and generalizes many well known classes of databases, such as bounded degree, bounded tree width or bounded expansion. It is known that over classes of databases with local bounded expansion, first-order sentences can be evaluated in pseudo-linear time (pseudo-linear time means that for all ε there exists an algorithm working in time O (n1+ε )). Here, we investigate other scenarios, where queries are not sentences. We show that first-order queries can be enumerated with constant delay after a pseudo-linear preprocessing over any class of databases having locally bounded expansion. We also show that, in this context, counting the number of solutions can be done in pseudo-linear time.

First-order queries on classes of structures with bounded expansion

We consider the evaluation of first-order queries over classes of databases with bounded expansion. The notion of bounded expansion is fairly broad and generalizes bounded degree, bounded treewidth and exclusion of at least one minor. It was known that over a class of databases with bounded expansion, firstorder sentences could be evaluated in time linear in the size of the database. We give a ...

Enumeration for FOQueries over Nowhere Dense Graphs

We consider the evaluation of first-order queries over classes of databases that are nowhere dense. The notion of nowhere dense classes was introduced by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez as a formalization of classes of “sparse” graphs and generalizes many well-known classes of graphs, such as classes of bounded degree, bounded treewidth, or bounded expansion. It has recently been shown by Grohe, ...

Answering FO+MOD Queries Under Updates on Bounded Degree Databases

We investigate the query evaluation problem for fixed queries over fully dynamic databases, where tuples can be inserted or deleted. The task is to design a dynamic algorithm that immediately reports the new result of a fixed query after every database update. We consider queries in first-order logic (FO) and its extension with modulo-counting quantifiers (FO+MOD), and show that they can be eff...

Constant Delay Enumeration for Acyclic Conjunctive Queries over X Structures

We present an efficient answer enumeration algorithm for an extension of Conditional XPath with variables, which is a first-order complete query language for unranked trees of bounded depth. Our algorithm requires constant delay and linear preprocessing time for fixed queries, while depending linearly on the size of the query. It is based on a new enumeration algorithm for disjunctions of acycl...

A glimpse on constant delay enumeration

We survey some of the recent results about enumerating the answers to queries over a database. We focus on the case where the enumeration is performed with a constant delay between any two consecutive solutions, after a linear time preprocessing. This cannot be always achieved. It requires restricting either the class of queries or the class of databases. We describe here several scenarios when...
