چکیده

Under time-dependent loading, an elastic material is undergoing the simplest form of damage, that which consists in passing from its original state to a weaker elastic state. Elaborating on prior work [FM93], we establish existence of a relaxed variational evolution where, at each time, the two states of the material combine to form a fine mixture, optimal from the standpoint of the applied load at that time, yet preserving the irreversibility of the damaging process.

Numerical investigation of dynamic brittle fracture via gradient damage models

Background: Gradient damage models can be acknowledged as a unified framework of dynamic brittle fracture. As a phase-field approach to fracture, they are gaining popularity over the last few years in the computational mechanics community. This paper concentrates on a better understanding of these models. We will highlight their properties during the initiation and propagation phases of defect ...

Simulation of Singular Fourth- Order Partial Differential Equations Using the Fourier Transform Combined With Variational Iteration Method

In this paper, we present a comparative study between the modified variational iteration method (MVIM) and a hybrid of Fourier transform and variational iteration method (FTVIM). The study outlines the efficiencyand convergence of the two methods. The analysis is illustrated by investigating four singular partial differential equations with variable coefficients. The solution of singular partia...

Mesoscale analysis of failure in quasi‐brittle materials: comparison between lattice model and acoustic emission data

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the development and the evolution of the fracture process zone during fracture and damage in quasi-brittle materials. A model taking into account the material details at the mesoscale is used to describe the failure process at the scale of the heterogeneities. This model is used to compute histograms of the relative distances between damaged points. These...

Overview: Damage in brittle layer structures from concentrated loads

In this article, we review recent advances in the understanding and analysis of damage initiation and evolution in laminate structures with brittle outerlayers and compliant sublayers in concentrated loading. The relevance of such damage to lifetime-limiting failures of engineering and biomechanical layer systems is emphasized. We describe the results of contact studies on monolayer, bilayer, t...

A variational model for fracture and debonding of thin films under in-plane loadings

We study fracture and debonding of a thin stiff film bonded to a rigid substrate through a thin compliant layer, introducing a two-dimensional variational fracture model in brittle elasticity. Fractures are naturally distinguished between transverse cracks in the film (curves in 2D) and debonded surfaces (2D planar regions). In order to study the mechanical response of such systems under increa...
