A single molecule magnet to single molecule magnet transformation via a solvothermal process: Fe4Dy2 → Fe6Dy3.

Two series of heterometallic Fe(III)-Ln(III) compounds, [FeLn(μ3-OH)2(mdea)4(m-NO2C6H4COO)8]·3MeCN where Ln = Y (1) and Dy (2) and [FeLn(μ4-O)3(μ3-O)(mdea)5(m-NO2C6H4COO)9]·3MeCN where Ln = Y (3) and Dy (4), were synthesized. Compounds 1 and 2 were obtained under ambient conditions, whereas 3 and 4 were obtained via a solvothermal transformation process by heating 1 or 2 at 120 °C in MeCN. The ...

Switchable slow relaxation of magnetization in the native low temperature phase of a cooperative spin-crossover compound.

The implementation of single-molecule magnet properties in spin crossover materials is sought as a unique source of magnetic multistability at the molecular level. Examples however remain extremely scarce, in part due to the diamagnetic state of most Fe(ii) spin crossover materials at low temperatures. We have studied the complex [Fe(mtz)6](CF3SO3)2 (mtz = 1-methyltetrazole) as a tantalizing ca...

Transition metal redox switches for reversible “on/off” and “slow/fast” single-molecule magnet behaviour in dysprosium and erbium bis-diamidoferrocene complexes† †Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available: Additional figures and tables. Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are considered viable candidates for next-generation data storage and quantum computing. Systems featuring switchability of their magnetization dynamics are particularly interesting with respect to accessing more complex logic gates and device architectures. Here we show that transition metal based redox events can be exploited to enable reversible switchability o...

An NCN-pincer ligand dysprosium single-ion magnet showing magnetic relaxation via the second excited state

Single-molecule magnets are compounds that exhibit magnetic bistability purely of molecular origin. The control of anisotropy and suppression of quantum tunneling to obtain a comprehensive picture of the relaxation pathway manifold, is of utmost importance with the ultimate goal of slowing the relaxation dynamics within single-molecule magnets to facilitate their potential applications. Combine...

Unprecedented magnetic relaxation via the fourth excited state in low-coordinate lanthanide single-ion magnets: a theoretical perspective.

Four low-coordinate SIMs have been studied to probe their relaxation dynamics using ab initio calculations. Our calculations reveal that both the symmetry and the equatorial ligand field play a key role in controlling the barrier heights in three-coordinate [Ln(III)(NSiMe3)3] complexes (Ln = Dy/Er). This study reveals an unprecedented blockade of magnetization up to three excited states for the...
