چکیده

A series of redox-active perylene tetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) derivatives have been synthesized and studied by electrochemical cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscopy break junction techniques. These PTCDI molecules feature the substitution of pyrrolidine at the bay (1,7-) position of perylene and are named pyrrolidine-PTCDIs. These moieties exhibit a small bandgap (2.1 eV) compared with the “normal” (unsubstituted) PTCDI molecule (2.5 eV). Pyrrolidine-PTCDIs were functionalized with different anchoring groups (thiol, amine, pyridine) for building metal−molecule−metal (m−M−m) junctions. The single-molecule conductance values of pyrrolidinePTCDIs have been determined by analyzing a large number of molecular (m−M−m) junctions created between an STM tip and substrate using a statistical method. Furthermore, we studied the gate dependence of the single-molecule conductance by trapping a molecule between the two electrodes and recording the current as a function of electrochemical gate potential. The experimentally determined conductance values for these bay-substituted pyrrolidine-PTCDI molecules are about twice as much as the unsubstituted PTCDI molecules. The present work shows that single-molecule conductance can be tuned by the bandgap of a molecular system without significantly altering the conductance pathway.

Break junction under electrochemical gating: testbed for single-molecule electronics.

Molecular electronics aims to construct functional molecular devices at the single-molecule scale. One of the major challenges is to construct a single-molecule junction and to further manipulate the charge transport through the molecular junction. Break junction techniques, including STM break junctions and mechanically controllable break junctions are considered as testbed to investigate and ...

Controlling charge transport in single molecules using electrochemical gate.

We have studied charge transport through single molecules covalently bound to two gold electrodes in electrolytes by applying a voltage between the two electrodes and a reference electrode (gate). This electrochemical gating can effectively control the current through the molecules, depending on the electronic properties of the molecules. For electrochemically inactive molecules, such as 4,4'-b...

Single-Molecule Break Junctions Based on a Perylene-Diimide Cyano-Functionalized (PDI8-CN2) Derivative

In this letter, we report the single-molecule conductance properties of a cyano-functionalized perylene-diimide derivative (PDI8-CN2) investigated with gold nano-electrodes. This molecule is of large interest for the fabrication of high-performance and air-stable n-type organic field-effect transistors. Low-bias experiments performed on mechanically controllable break junctions reveal the prese...

Large gate modulation in the current of a room temperature single molecule transistor.

We have demonstrated a single molecule field effect transistor (FET) which consists of a redox molecule (perylene tetracarboxylic diimide) covalently bonded to a source and drain electrode and an electrochemical gate. By adjusting the gate voltage, the energy levels of empty molecular states are shifted to the Fermi level of the source and drain electrodes. This results in a nearly 3 orders of ...

Regulating a benzodifuran single molecule redox switch via electrochemical gating and optimization of molecule/electrode coupling.

We report a novel strategy for the regulation of charge transport through single molecule junctions via the combination of external stimuli of electrode potential, internal modulation of molecular structures, and optimization of anchoring groups. We have designed redox-active benzodifuran (BDF) compounds as functional electronic units to fabricate metal-molecule-metal (m-M-m) junction devices b...
