چکیده

Objectives The objective of this research is to characterize biological, physical and chemical soil quality parameters and monitor their changes over time in minimum tillage and no-till seeding systems as affected by tillage, crop species and management systems to identify soil quality attributes that can be used in the development of best management practices for conserving soil quality and enhancing crop production.

Validation of WEPS for soil and PM10 loss from agricultural fields within the Columbia Plateau of the United States

Wind erosion from agricultural fields contributes to poor air quality within the Columbia Plateau of the United States. Erosion from fields managed in a conventional winter wheat– summer fallow rotation was monitored during the fallow period near Washtucna, WA, in 2003 and 2004. Loss of soil and PM10 (particulates ≤10 μm in diameter) was measured during six high wind events (sustained wind spee...

An Analysis of Historical and Present Dust Deposition on the Columbia Plateau

Most soils on the Columbia Plateau are derived from windblown sediments deposited over the last 15,000 years, although dust deposition has been ongoing in the region for two million years resulting in loess deposits up to 75 m (250 ft) thick. Many of the soils contain significant amounts of fine particulates and if exposed when dry can produce massive clouds of dust during high wind events that...

Windblown dust influenced by conventional and undercutter tillage within the Columbia Plateau, USA

Exceedance of the US Environmental Protection Agency national ambient air quality standard for PM10 (particulate matter ≤10 μm in aerodynamic diameter) within the Columbia Plateau region of the Pacific Northwest US is largely caused by wind erosion of agricultural lands managed in a winter wheat–summer fallow rotation. Land management practices, therefore, are sought that will reduce erosion an...

Instrumentation to Quantify Soil and PM10 Flux Using a Portable Wind Tunnel

Wind erosion threatens soil productivity and air quality in the Columbia Plateau region of the Pacific Northwest United States. Management practices are sought that will abate erosion, but limitations exist in measuring the effectiveness of these practices in reducing erosion. Portable wind tunnels are ideal tools that can be used to assess the impact of management practices on erosion. A porta...

Northwest Columbia Plateau PM10 Project Objective 7: Identify Sustainable Farming Practices for the Columbia Plateau by Measuring Changes in Soil Quality Title: Soil Quality Changes with No-till Management Adoption for Wind Erosion Control

of Research Findings Soil quality parameters were assessed at several long-term dryland cropping systems research sites in eastern Washington to further define management practices that are soil building rather than degrading. The objective was to characterize soil quality changes over time as affected by no-till versus traditional tillage-based management systems. Soil organic carbon slowly in...
