Global Daytime Distribution of Overlapping Cirrus Cloud from NOAA's Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer

چکیده
Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument are used to provide the mean July and January global daytime distributions of multilayer cloud, where multilayer cloud is defined as cirrus overlapping one or more lower layers. The AVHRR data was taken from multiple years that were chosen to provide data with a constant local equator crossing time of 2:30-3:00 PM. The cloud overlap detection algorithm is used in NOAA's Extended Clouds from AVHRR (CLAVR-x) processing system. The results between 60°N and 60°S indicated that roughly 20% of all clouds and roughly 40% of all ice clouds were classified as cirrus overlapping lower cloud (cirrus overlap). The results show a strong July – January pattern that is consistent with the seasonal cycle in convection. In some regions, cirrus overlap is found to be the dominant type of cloud observed. The distributions of overlapping cirrus cloud presented here are compared with results from other studies based on rawinsondes and manual surface observations. Comparisons are also made with another satellite derived study that used coincident infrared and microwave observations over the tropical oceans during a six month period

Bayesian Cloud Detection for 37 Years of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Area Coverage (GAC) Data
Cloud detection is a source of significant errors in retrieval of sea surface temperature (SST). We apply a Bayesian cloud detection scheme to 37 years of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Area Coverage (GAC) data, which is an important source of multi-decadal global SST information. The Bayesian scheme calculates a probability of clear-sky for each image pixel, conditiona...

A multispectral, multiresolution (MSMR) method is developed for analyzing scenes of overlapping cloud layers. The MSMR method is applied to data from the NOAA 11 advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) and the high-resolution infrared radiometer sounder (HIRS-2). The data are from a nighttime oceanic scene in which a semitransparent cirrus veil overlays a large-scale stratus cloud. Low...
متن کاملA Near-Global Climatology of Single-Layer and Overlapped Clouds and Their Optical Properties Retrieved from Terra/MODIS Data Using a New Algorithm
Cloud overlapping has been a major issue in climate studies owing to a lack of reliable information available over both oceans and land. This study presents the first near-global retrieval and analysis of single-layer and overlapped cloud vertical structures and their optical properties retrieved by applying a new method to the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Taking ...

We develop a retrieval scheme by using advanced very-high-resolution radiometer (AVHRR) 3.7- and 10.9-microm data to compute simultaneously the temperature, optical depth, and mean effective ice-crystal size for cirrus clouds. The methodology involves the numerical solution of a set of nonlinear algebraic equations derived from the theory of radiative transfer. The solution requires the correla...
متن کاملDetecting Cirrus-Overlapping-Water Clouds and Retrieving their Optical Properties Using MODIS Data
Different methods have been proposed to detect multilayer clouds using passive remote sensing data. Baum et al. (1995) used the CO2-slicing technique applied to the High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) data to determine cirrus cloud heights. The spatial coherence technique (Coakley and Bretherton 1982) was applied to the advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) data to dete...
