چکیده

Objective This in vitro study evaluated the disinfection action of peracetic acid on chemically activated acrylic resin. Methods Sixty chemically activated acrylic resin specimens were contaminated with Candida albicans (30) and Bacillus subtilis (30) for 15 minutes. Next, specimens were divided into Control Group (Group 0) and Test Group (T) for each studied microorganism. The antimicrobial effect of Proxitane® Alfa (Thech Desinfecção, São Paulo, Brazil), containing 0.25% and 0.025% concentrations of peracetic acid was verified after 1, 3, 5 and 10 minutes of exposure. The specimens were transferred to saline solution for 5 minutes, homogenized and aliquots of 100μL were plated on BHI and Sabouraud Dextrose agar. After incubation at 37oC/24h, the number of CFU/mL recovered from each specimen was obtained. Results The 0.025 % peracetic acid was effective against B. subtilis only after 10 minutes and against C. albicans after 3 minutes of exposure. At 0.25% concentration, the solution showed fungicidal and bactericidal efficacy after 1 minute of exposure. Conclusion The 0.25% peracetic acid was shown to be efficient for disinfection of chemically activated acrylic resins. Indexing terms: Acrylic resin. Complete denture. Disinfection. Peracetic acid.

Effect of sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid on the surface roughness of acrylic resin polymerized by heated water for short and long cycles

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the surface roughness of acrylic resin submitted to chemical disinfection via 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) or 1% peracetic acid (C2H4O3). MATERIALS AND METHODS The disc-shaped resin specimens (30 mm diameter ×4 mm height) were polymerized by heated water using two cycles (short cycle: 1 h at 74°C and 30 min at 100°C; conventional long cycle: 9 h at 74°C). The release o...

Preparation of Water-Based Alkyd/Acrylic Hybrid Resins

Alkyd resins are amongst the most important and widely used resins in coating sectors. In this communication we report on preparation of alkyd resins emulsified by grafted acrylic resins on their fatty acid moieties. Both high-shear mechanical homogenizer and ultra-sonic sonicator were used step-wise to disperse the alkyd resin and acrylic based monomers in aqueous media. The resins are of nano...

Comparative Evaluation of the Flexural Strength of Heat Polymerized Acrylic Resin with the Addition of 8% and 13% Aluminum Oxide Powder: An In-vitro Study

Introduction: Acrylic resins have been used successfully as denture bases. However, acrylic resin denture base materials are brittle and have poor strength and thermal conductivity. Therefore, it is essential to improve the flexural strength of heat polymerized acrylic resin. The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the flexural strength of heated polymerized acrylic res...
