چکیده

Nature ofphysical problem A lot of problems in physics, chemistry, applied mathematics as well as in engineering and in other fields, are quite often reduced tominimizing a function of several variables. MERLIN is a system designed to minimize a multidimensional function. Method of solution Six algorithms are implemented. Three of them make use of the function’s gradient and hence are suitable for minimizing differentiable functions, the rest three do not use derivatives at all and so are applicable to non-differentiable functions as well. The first three are the quasi-Newton methods known as DFP (1], BFGS [2] and the conjugate gradient method of Polak and Ribiere [3]. The SIMPLEX method of Nedler and Mead [4], corrected as suggested by Mike and Chaves [5], a random search and an ad hoc method, which use only function values, are implemented as well.

A Multidimensional Bisection Method for Unconstrained Minimization Problem

An extension of a new multidimensional bisection method for minimizing function over simplex is proposed for solving nonlinear unconstrained minimization problem. The method does not require a differentiability of function, and is guaranteed to converge to the minimizer for the class of strictly unimodal functions. The computational results demonstrating an effectiveness of algorithm for minimi...

A Quadratically Converging Algorithm of Multidimensional Scaling

Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is well known technique for analysis of multidimensional data. The most important part of implementation of MDS is minimization of STRESS function. The convergence rate of known local minimization algorithms of STRESS function is no better than superlinear. The regularization of the minimization problem is proposed which enables the minimization of STRESS by means...

Generalized Adjoint for Physical Processes with Parameterized Discontinuities. Part VI: Minimization Problems in Multidimensional Space

Generalized adjoint with modified discretization and generalized coarse-grain adjoint are derived for a vector system of equations that contains parameterized on/off switches. With vector examples, it is shown that the conventional adjoint minimization may have a convergence problem in multidimensional space. The problem can be solved by the generalized adjoint with modified discretization or b...

Stability of Multidimensional Systems Using Genetic Algorithms

The study of the stability of -dimensional systems is a difficult one especially when 3. There exist only a few results in the literature and unfortunately, there does not exist any practical criterion. In this brief, the stability of an -dimensional system is dealt as a minimization problem of the absolute value of its characteristic polynomial over the boundaries of its variables (i.e., on th...
