Content-Based Indexing of Symbolic Music Documents

چکیده

Indexing is the core component of most information retrieval systems, because it allows for a compact representation of the content of a collection of documents, aimed at efficient and scalable access and retrieval. Indexing techniques can be extended also to music, providing that significant descriptors are computed from music documents. These descriptors can be defined as the “lexical units” of music, depend on the dimensions that are taken into account – melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre – and are related to the way listeners perceive music. This chapter describes some relevant aspects of indexing of symbolic music documents, giving a review of its basic concepts and going in more detail about some key aspects, such as the consistency at which candidate index terms are perceived by listeners, the effectiveness of alternative approaches to compute indexes, and how individual indexing schemes can be combined together by applying data fusion approaches.

Content-based Information Retrieval by Group Theoretical Methods

This paper presents a general framework for efficiently indexing and searching large collections of multimedia documents by content. Among the multimedia information retrieval scenarios that fit into this framework are music, audio, image and 3D object retrieval. Combining the technique of inverted files with methods from group theory we obtain space efficient indexing structures as well as tim...

Evaluation of a Meta-1-based automatic indexing method for medical documents.

This paper describes MetaIndex, an automatic indexing program that creates symbolic representations of documents for the purpose of document retrieval. MetaIndex uses a simple transition network parser to recognize a language that is derived from the set of main concepts in the Unified Medical Language System Metathesaurus (Meta-1). MetaIndex uses a hierarchy of medical concepts, also derived f...

A Measure of Melodic Similarity based on a Graph Representation of the Music Structure

Content-based music retrieval requires to define a similarity measure between music documents. In this paper, we propose a novel similarity measure between melodic content, as represented in symbolic notation, that takes into account musicological aspects on the structural function of the melodic elements. The approach is based on the representation of a collection of music scores with a graph ...

Experiments on Segmentation Techniques for Music Documents Indexing

This paper presents an overview of different approaches to melody segmentation aimed at extracting music lexical units, which can be used as content descriptors of music documents. Four approaches have been implemented and compared on a test collection of real documents and queries, showing their impact on index term size and on retrieval effectiveness. From the results, simple but extensive ap...

A Survey of Music Information Retrieval Systems

This survey paper provides an overview of content-based music information retrieval systems, both for audio and for symbolic music notation. Matching algorithms and indexing methods are briefly presented. The need for a TREC-like comparison of matching algorithms such as MIREX at ISMIR becomes clear from the high number of quite different methods which so far only have been used on different da...
