Optical interpretation of special relativity and quantum mechanics

چکیده

Abstract: The present work shows that through a suitable change of variables relativistic dynamics can be mapped to light propagation in a non-homogeneous medium. A particle’s trajectory through the modified space-time is thus formally equivalent to a light ray and can be derived from a mechanical equivalent of Fermat’s principle. The similarities between light propagation and mechanics are then extended to quantum mechanics, showing that relativistic quantum mechanics can be derived from a wave equation in modified space-time. Non-relativistic results, such as de Broglie’s wavelength, Schrödinger equation and uncertainty principle are shown to be direct consequences of the theory and it is argued that relativistic conclusions are also possible.

The EPR Argument in a Relational Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

It is shown that in the Rovelli relational interpretation of quantum mechanics, in which the notion of absolute or observer independent state is rejected, the conclusion of the ordinary EPR argument turns out to be frame-dependent, provided the conditions of the original argument are suitably adapted to the new interpretation. The consequences of this result for the ‘peaceful coexistence’ of qu...

Wigner’s new physics frontier: Physics of two-by-two matrices, including the Lorentz group and optical instruments

According to Eugene Wigner, quantum mechanics is a physics of Fourier transformations, and special relativity is a physics of Lorentz transformations. Since two-by-two matrices with unit determinant form the group SL(2, c) which acts as the universal covering group of the Lorentz group, the two-by-two matrices constitute the natural language for special relativity. The central language for opti...

Interpreting doubly special relativity as a modified theory of measurement

In this article we develop a physical interpretation for the deformed (doubly) special relativity theories (DSRs), based on a modification of the theory of measurement in special relativity. We suggest that it is useful to regard the DSRs as reflecting the manner in which quantum gravity effects induce Planck-suppressed distortions in the measurement of the “true” energy and momentum. This inte...

Coherent States for 3d Deformed Special Relativity: semi-classical points in a quantum flat spacetime

We analyse the quantum geometry of 3-dimensional deformed special relativity (DSR) and the notion of spacetime points in such a context, identified with coherent states that minimize the uncertainty relations among spacetime coordinates operators. We construct this system of coherent states in both the Riemannian and Lorentzian case, and study their properties and their geometric interpretation.

The classical ether-drift experiments: A modern re-interpretation

The condensation of elementary quanta and their macroscopic occupation of the same quantum state, say k = 0 in some reference frame Σ, is the essential ingredient of the degenerate vacuum of present-day elementary particle physics. This represents a sort of “quantum ether” which characterizes the physically realized form of relativity and could play the role of preferred reference frame in a mo...
